The program’s focus is to help expand access to high-quality healthcare for all today and support the development of the providers and technologists who will drive access to high-quality healthcare for all in the future. This effort, rooted in a deep understanding of structural health equity, diversity, and inclusion, includes philanthropy, employee volunteering, in-kind product and service donations, supporting STEM education opportunities, along with strategic partnerships with nonprofit organizations whose work and missions align and support the overarching athenaGives’ goals.

athenaGives’ key programs include: (1) Free Clinic Partnership Program, (2) alignment with nonprofit organizations that focus on health equity both in the United States and globally, and (3) collaborations with nonprofits focused on ensuring access to STEM education for underrepresented populations.

Free Clinic Partnership Program: athenaGives provides more than a quarter of all the free and charitable clinics in the US with the healthcare technology they need to offer high-quality healthcare to underserved people in communities that may not otherwise have access. More than 400 free clinics nationally receive access to athenahealth’s EHR technology and support services at no cost; this includes athenahealth’s telehealth platform, which is crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic. Smile Foundation: athenaGives partnered with the Smile Foundation during the COVID-19 pandemic to launch “Smile on Wheels” across 14 locations in Chennai, India. “Smile on Wheels” is a mobile medical unit offering primary healthcare services to people residing in unserved or underserved areas in India. To date, more than 8,000 people have received care at no cost to them.

Hack for Health Equity: In 2021, athenaGives, with support from PATH (a nonprofit partner and an athenahealth FQHC clients) hosted a company-wide hackathon. More than 100 athenahealth employees spent 48 hours collaborating to develop solutions to healthcare’s toughest challenges.. The effort resulted in product enhancements that support patients so they receive more equitable, personalized, gender-affirming, and appropriate care. Today, transgender and non-binary Americans face many barriers to accessing inclusive healthcare. This new functionality enables the accurate labeling of a patient (name used, gender identity and pronouns – in addition to legal name and sex assigned at birth) throughout the entirety of the patient experience – ensuring that patients are appropriately addressed and identified throughout their healthcare experience.

  5. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this third question: Explain why the achievements you have highlighted are unique or significant. If possible compare the achievements to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the organization's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 240 words used.

Health equity is at the forefront of all athenaGives’ programming. One of the greatest challenges within the healthcare system today is that some of the sickest patients who most need continuous, consistent, preventive care often face not only challenges related to their illness, but systemic barriers to accessing care. The social determinants of health are also the social determinants of access. To change this, health equity needs to become a priority in the health sector, and measures to reduce disparities must be integrated into health programs and services. We are committed to doing our part.

For example, athenaGives’ Free Clinic Partnership Program leverages the athenahealth network to enable free and charitable clinics to deliver high-quality care to underserved and under-resourced patients and communities across the country. By providing free technology and support services to more than 400 free and charitable clinics, we are creating a more equitable healthcare system for all Americans. Through the Free Clinic Partnership Program, the number of providers treating patients across the network increased 57% from 2020 to 2021. Total providers increased from 4,400 to 7,012 year over year. Additionally, in 2021 the more than 400 free and charitable clinics on the athenahealth network increased the number of patient visits by 119% compared to the previous year, with over one million conducted. Of these patients, 58% reported as female, 60% reported as an ethnicity other than white, and 54% were from low-income zip codes.

  6. You have the option to answer this final question: Reference any attachments of supporting materials throughout this nomination and how they provide evidence of the claims you have made in this nomination (up to 250 words):
