Nomination Title: Age of Learning – ReadingIQ

Age of Learning’s ReadingIQ is an advanced digital library for children 12 and under designed to help parents, teachers, and children work together on a child’s journey to literacy. The app gives families and teachers access to thousands of high-quality books selected by experts to advance literacy.

We know that reading is the foundation of education and vital to children’s success in school and beyond; however, a recent study from Age of Learning showed that many children lack access to books at home and in school. More than half of American families have fewer than 50 books (of any kind) in their homes, including children’s books. And according to teachers, lack of access to books at home is one of the top three obstacles to getting their students to read. Additionally, more than 8,000 elementary schools in the U.S., or about 10 percent of schools in the country, do not have a school library. ReadingIQ addresses these challenges by increasing the availability and equity of high-quality, high-interest books for kids across the globe via smartphones, tablets, and computers. ReadingIQ is currently being used by more than 17,000 teachers across the U.S. and in their classrooms.

ReadingIQ addresses the needs of advanced and beginner readers. The entire library is easily searchable by topic and reading level so children can find titles that match their interests and reading ability. These titles include Caldecott and Newbery award winners, the complete Boxcar Children series, Curious George, National Geographic Kids books, more than 1,000 exclusive titles, and thousands of other high-quality fiction and nonfiction books from leading publishers. Fun comprehension quizzes allow children to see what they have understood of a book and earn stars for their avatar, which motivates them to continue discovering new books.

Teachers report students with access to both physical and digital libraries are significantly more likely to be reading above grade level than those students without that access. ReadingIQ is available at no cost for teachers, with the ability to assign books to each student to read at home, completely free at their convenience. Parents and teachers can both track student reading progress. These capabilities build a strong school-home connection around reading and empower parents to become more involved in their child’s academic and reading success.

In addition, parents can create profiles for up to three children within the app, without a subscription or credit card. To unlock the full library, families can subscribe to ReadingIQ for less than $30 a year, or under $5 a month.

By bringing easy access to thousands of titles across hundreds of subjects and demystifying reading levels, ReadingIQ helps critical challenges around literacy development.
