In 2022, more than 1,500 at-risk 18- to 24-year-olds in Washington State were living without a most basic human need: housing. This video tells how Fannie Mae — true to our mission to provide access to affordable housing where it’s needed most — with the local YMCA and the Tacoma Housing Authority invested in the Arlington Apartments. The investment utilized Low-Income Housing Tax Credits to enable lower rents. Arlington serves the needs of low- to very low-income young adults. From homelessness to stability and hope, we follow a young man and his family’s journey. He had a job and car but could not find reliable affordable housing. The Arlington Apartments provide them quality housing, stability, and on-site support services. The Arlington gives residents the opportunity to build a rental history and build real credit, and now this young family has hopes of someday owning a home. Prior to the Arlington, places like this did not exist in Tacoma. We are proud that this is a replicable model that can be used nationwide to change the trajectory of many people’s lives and promote more sustainable and equitable communities.
