We know that storytelling is an important mechanism for social change.

Which is why In 2017, the Women Talk Tech podcast was founded by Marie Wiese to begin to address the gender gap in the technology sector.

The tech sector is one of the most dynamic and innovative industries. But despite its many successes, it still faces a significant problem: the gender gap. Through the podcast we aim to address numerous structural and cultural barriers perpetuate the gender gap in tech. Over the past five years our initiative has developed into a collective of leaders dedicated to ensuring more diverse representation in companies that are making technology decisions for our world.

The podcast profiles women in the tech industry who share stories about their careers in tech. With over 100+ episodes recorded, the podcast has successfully reached and engaged with a broad audience, making a lasting impact on thousands of people.

In the last year, the podcast has launched three new series aimed at highlighting the diverse stories of women forging a path in the tech sector. Our first series of the year entitled “Emerging Tech” highlighted the ways the tech industry has transformed since 2020 by featuring women's stories of success and struggle through such unprecedented times.  Our second series of the year “Opening Doors” worked to amplify the unique and powerful stories of women in the industry who are working to foster more inclusive and diverse spaces for women in male dominated field. And finally, our current series, “We Are All in Tech” which features women who have forged unique pathways to success in their careers by using technology.

Additionally, we recently launched our Ambition Report entitled “Redefining Ambition”. The report consists of data collected from our Ambition Survey which sought out to understand ambition, what we know of it, and how it factors into the progression of women in the workforce. Through research, data collection and analysis, and conversations with our community we have identified a need to redefine what ambition means so that we may create a more inclusive and accessible space for everyone to talk about their goals motivations, and ambitions, helping one another to reach their full potential.

We have also continued to invest time and resources into our community. Most notably through our media partnership with the Global Women in IT Summit and Awards series which shares our dedication to the promotion of gender equity in the technology sector. Our partnership has consisted of host, Marie Wiese, speaking at their Canadian last fall in Toronto, amplifying their messaging on our podcast, and recently receiving two nominations for their Canadian awards of “Advocate of the Year” and “Diversity Equity and Inclusion initiative of the year".

Beyond this, we have also invested time in our local community by working with other grassroots organizations such as the Sandbox Centre in Barrie Ontario who recently hosted their Ambitious AF event which aimed to connect women entrepreneurs and business leaders. The event was filled with powerful conversations, networking opportunities, and key insights into how we can work to empower other women on their journeys towards success.

After a busy year of growth, we are proud to continue our work moving forward. Our podcast is currently booked out until the end of October, with an inspiring roster of guests, who we are eager to speak with and share their stories. We are incredibly proud of the growth we’ve experienced over the past year and the power powerful platform we’ve created for driving change and progress in the tech community.
