Nomination Category: Individual Categories
Nomination Sub Category: Best Executive – Non-Services Businesses – More Than 2,500 Employees

Nomination Title: Janice Chaffin, Group President, Consumer Business Unit

Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated executive during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):

The president of Symantec’s Consumer Business Unit, Janice Chaffin, oversees
more than 30 percent of Symantec’s $6 billion in revenues. One of only a handful
of women in Silicon Valley leading a nearly $2 billion-dollar plus business,
Chaffin is responsible for every aspect of Symantec’s popular Norton brand,
helping protect consumers from computer viruses, identity theft and emerging
Internet threats.

Passionate about every aspect of the customer experience, Chaffin helped
Symantec achieve record highs in customer loyalty and launched a set of products
that have won over 150 awards – more than any in Norton’s history.  She is a
formidable competitor, driving revenue growth despite tough economic times.
Chaffin is also a dedicated community volunteer. She serves as president of her
local National Charity League Inc. chapter and volunteers frequently with her
two teenage daughters.

Leadership in Customer Experience

When Chaffin took the helm at Norton, security products were generally
considered slow and bloated. Consumers often turned off their security software
to speed up their PC, leaving them at risk. With 1 in 5 online shoppers falling
victim to cybercrime (Consumer Reports, 2009), Norton had to reverse this trend.

In September 2008, Chaffin’s team launched a revamped Internet security suite
that set a new industry standard -- and won more than 150 awards --  more than
any product in Norton’s history.  Norton’s nearest competitor has only won a
handful for its comparable products.

Norton’s game-changing product advancements and Chaffin’s relentless focus on
customer experience, such as hiring Norton’s first-ever Customer Experience
czar, has led to record customer satisfaction. For the first time, Norton won
two consecutive STAR Awards from the Service & Support Professionals
Association, the largest association for technology service and support
professionals worldwide.  And, there has been tangible business impact to the
progress made under Chaffin’s watch, with Norton’s support costs declining 30
percent.

Growing in a Down Economy

Despite tough economic times, Chaffin increased revenue for Symantec’s consumer
business four percent year over year for fiscal year 2009. She did this by
growing Symantec’s core consumer business through product quality and customer
experience improvements and by expanding beyond Norton’s installed base through
new offerings.

In the age of Facebook and YouTube, Chaffin also identified a major opportunity
in online file backup as consumers’ video, photo and music libraries grow at a
staggering pace. According to industry analyst firm IDC, consumer online storage
data is expected to grow 75.5% between 2007 and 2012. To address this, Chaffin
spearheaded Symantec’s acquisition of SwapDrive, a leading provider of online
backup services. Since then, Symantec’s consumer back up business has grown at a
rapid pace, now serving 9 million customers and storing 38 petabytes of consumer
data - nearly 40 times more data than all the print collections housed in the
U.S. Library of Congress .  Today, Symantec’s consumer backup business is the
leading provider of backup services and more than seven times the size of its
nearest competitor.

Community Service

In June 2009, Chaffin assumed presidency of her local National Charity Leage
chapter, a philanthropic organization whose mission is to foster mother-daughter
relationships, commitment to community, and leadership development through
serving organizations such as the Humane Society and Emergency Housing Consortium.

She is executive sponsor of Symantec Women’s Action Network, a women’s forum
that assists in building a work environment that encourages female employees to
achieve their career aspirations.
