Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated employee during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):
Kathrin Winkler has a history of taking on entirely new roles in which she has
to fill in the interstices between more traditional functions. Her story is one
of a women taking her adventurous spirit and desire to understand how the world
and its ecosystems are interconnected to the corporate meeting room, and in the
process, casting her company’s focus in a worthy direction. This desire to
understand the interconnections between the environment, management, business
and technology lead Kathrin to her role as EMC’s first Senior Director of
Corporate Sustainability, which she assumed in 2008.
In this position, Kathrin has led the IT giant’s green initiatives and elevated
its environmental commitment into a top company priority. She has aggressively
and creatively driven EMC’s sustainability initiatives, leveraging social media
and innovative processes and programs, to improve energy efficiency in EMC’s
products and throughout the company; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; further
education in the community and among EMC’s 40,000+ employees; and help
organizations around the globe preserve their information heritage.
Commenting on her role, Kathrin said, “It’s really the confluence of my personal
interests and professional career. I’ve been in high tech my whole career. I
always loved building bigger systems out of smaller systems by looking at the
connections. I’ve been in software engineering and product development, and I
migrated into project management. This is kind of a marriage of the two,
connecting the business and technical sides… I’ve always had an interest in the
natural world. Scuba diving just really broadened my view of the natural world
and got me more excited about the various connections between the ecosystems.
The two of them came together when EMC decided to create an office of
corporate sustainability.”
Since assuming her role, some of Kathrin’s specific accomplishments include:
• Launched EMC’s “Green Champions” program and recruited employee
volunteers from 11 counties to gather and assess ideas to reduce the
environmental impact in their offices and work with EMC’s Facilities, IT and
other functions to implement them. Kathrin and the Green Champions use EMC’s
internal social networking site to brainstorm and drive environmental
initiatives locally, and share best practices with other Green Champions around
the world.
• Led EMC’s sustainability initiatives that resulted in the company
being recognized with a Boston Business Journal's Green Summit Award.
• Published EMC’s first Corporate Sustainability Report for employees,
customers, partners and investors.
• Worked with her peers in consortia and coalitions such as The Green
Grid, a consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers
where she sits on the Board of Directors; the Storage Networking Industry
Association where she was a co-founder of the Green Storage Initiative; and the
World Resources Institute where EMC is participating in the Greenhouse Gas
Protocol Initiative for measuring Scope 3 emissions.
• Led EMC’s engagements with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
and European Union Code of Conduct to provide insight on the role of storage
technology in energy efficiency and conservation.

Kathrin Winkler, Senior Director of Corporate Sustainability provides vision and
leadership for the development and implementation of EMC’s environmental and
social sustainability strategy. Kathrin works with EMC’s Green Business
Leadership, a cross-functional team that champions environmental initiatives,
ensuring the integration of sustainability principles in day-to-day operations.
Kathrin works with her peers in consortia such as The Green Grid, has led EMC’s
engagements with the U.S. EPA and E.U. Code of Conduct, and frequently speaks at
Sustainability/Green IT conferences. She joined EMC in 2003, bringing 25 years
of engineering and product management experience in networking, enterprise
systems management and information security.
