Docs Outside the Box is an integrative health clinic combining traditional, evidence-based medicine with holistic medicine creating an entirely new approach to healthcare.  At the heart of what drives us is our patient empowerment philosophy that answers the cultural and environmental demands for a team approach to medicine where the patient is empowered to own their health through guided education and choice. While being medically supervised, our patients choose their treatment. With their choice, they are given the opportunity to take responsibility for their health and own their outcomes.

Education is the focus of this practice.  Our physician extenders join our team to learn the patient empowerment philosophy along with alternative modalities while staying current in all evidence-based medicine protocols.

Since our inception in 2016, we have grown from a two-provider practice to a nine-provider practice.  In our first years we treated and educated on average 100 patients a week.  Currently, we treat over 350 patients weekly.

We are a privately owned independent medical practice which is part of a vanishing breed.  We began as a startup endeavor and have blossomed to a 3-million-dollar revenue stream, and we are on course to exceed that in 2023 to 4 million.

  4. Outline the organization's achievements since July 1 2021 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

    Total 250 words used.

    1. By July 2021, our clinic had responded to the Covid crisis by increasing manpower, creating a contagious wing for urgent care and securing all necessary medical equipment and supplies to treat Covid and prevent hospitalization.

We were proactive and innovative such that < 1 percent of our Covid cases required hospitalization because we proactively got oxygen in their homes, administered IV vitamin C, and secured more than 1,000 monoclonal antibodies by petitioning our governor when the resources were limited.

    2.  Post July 2021, we began expanding our work force from 2 providers and 2 support staff to our current staff total of 23 to accommodate the overwhelming demand.

    3.  We opened a pediatric division called” Kids Outside the Box!”  to educate entire families from before birth to death.

    4.  We expanded the clinic from 6k sq ft to 8k sq ft including a new education area, new pediatric section, new “IV  bar,” 10 new rooms, more urgent care rooms, and hired a nutritionist.

    5.  We transitioned to a new electronic medical record for better revenue cycle management and patient portal access.

    6.  Our new additional space allowed for the donation of an exam room bi-monthly for “Her Scan”, a breast imaging service for out-of-pocket ultrasounds.

    7.  We expanded our provider education program to include outside educators including providers and industry educators for weekly classes.

    8. Designed and participated in a prospective IRB study sponsored by Standard Process and studying impacts of nutrition on the cardiovascular system.

Our growth began before the summer 2021 and has continued but it was July 2021 that the Delta variant was rampant in St Petersburg, Florida.  We were called to task and opened the clinic six days a week to accommodate the sick during a pandemic.

  6. Explain why the achievements you have highlighted are unique or significant. If possible compare the achievements to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the organization's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 251 words used.

    (Reference the answers above, numerically)

    1.  At the beginning of the pandemic, no other out-patient clinics would see much less treat Covid positive patients. We rose to the occasion. Our statistics in treating Covid were superior to any published data.  We treated over 5,000 Covid positive patients in person.

    2.  In 2021 most primary care practices had dropped down to seeing 20-30% of their regular volume.  We quadrupled our volume simply by doing the right thing following the Hippocratic Oath.

    3.  The emphasis in our pediatric clinic is on prevention of chronic disease and obesity. It is estimated that more than 40% of school-aged children in the US today have at least one chronic illness.  This is an investment in the future of our country and protection of medical and financial resources.

    4.  In 2020, eight percent of private medical practices closed.

    5.  This was a complex undertaking during a pandemic, an addition and development of new programs.

    6.  Radiology facilities have largely stopped performing breast ultrasounds in the absence of a mammogram for legal reasons.  By donating an exam room, women are able to obtain an ultrasound even if they wish to avoid a mammogram.

    7.  Most clinics hire mid-levels to process many patients quickly.  We hire mid-levels and train them in our new medical model to give these options to more patients.

    8.  Conventional medical studies are well-funded by the pharmaceutical industry.  We believe it is important to study and publish the effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions on health.
