Cars and trucks spew tons of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the air every day. Businesses throughout North America who operate fleets of vehicles to accomplish their sales, service, and delivery needs are concerned about the environment. And they should be – there are approximately 10 million U.S. vehicles registered to commercial vehicle fleets. These fleet vehicles are driven an average of 25,000 miles per year – nearly double the mileage, fuel consumption, and corresponding emissions of personal vehicles. We think there’s a better way.
PHH Arval, a leading fleet management company that provides services to thousands of corporations and businesses, has partnered with Environmental Defense Fund, one of the nation’s leading environmental organizations, to develop PHH GreenFleet, a program to address the challenge of transportation- related greenhouse gas emissions.
PHH GreenFleet has been hailed for its common-sense approach to helping corporations not just reduce GHG emissions from their company vehicles, but actually make their fleets climate-neutral. Other fleet management companies have since come out with environmental programs, but PHH GreenFleet remains the most comprehensive and successful.
The linkage is simple: burning a gallon of fuel creates greenhouse gas emissions and costs money, so cutting fuel consumption will reduce pollution and fuel costs. PHH GreenFleet helps businesses achieve their environmental goals by:
• Measuring and reporting on greenhouse gas emissions to demonstrate progress and improvements over time. • Recommending and implementing improvements in fleet vehicle selection that result in increased efficiency and lower emissions. • Improving vehicle use through driver training, telematics, and improved preventive maintenance. • Offsetting remaining emissions by investing in credible, third party verified greenhouse gas reduction projects.
Results:
PHH clients are not only reducing their fleet emissions, but also reducing their fleet costs. To date, more than a dozen clients with over 60,000 vehicles have been benefited from the program. Here are some specific examples:
• Abbott, one of the world's leading health care companies, reduced its GHG emission by 4.2%, improved its fuel economy by 4.3%, and lowered its fleet costs 4.1%. In addition, the company announced that it will make its fleet climate neutral starting in 2008. The PHH GreenFleet initiative is part of Abbott’s ongoing corporate commitment to reduce GHG emissions by 10% by 2010 (normalized by sales).
• Infinity Property and Casualty Corporation, a leading nonstandard personal auto insurer, reduced its GHG emissions by 16%, improved its fuel economy by 25%, and reduced its fleet costs by 10%. In addition, it went climate neutral by purchasing greenhouse gas offsets for the remaining emissions. The offsets were purchased from a project in Chino, CA that reduces methane emissions from local dairy farms.
• And in Canada, The Co-operators Group Ltd., the leading Canadian-owned, multi-product insurance company, recently announced its participation in PHH GreenFleet and expects to improve fuel economy by over 20%, without increasing fleet costs.
PHH GreenFleet is all about helping corporations reduce their impact on the environment – and it works.
