MOID, Dubai
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MOID) of Dubai is the execution arm of the UAE federal government and supports the country's global competitiveness through development of balanced infrastructure capable to compete by organizing, planning, constructing and maintaining infrastructure projects.
In the inaugural Middle East Stevie Awards, The Ministry of Infrastructure Development won the 2020 Gold Stevie Award for Excellence in Innovation in Government for the Federal Roads Department Innovations and developments
One of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s major duties is the planning, execution, operation and development of the federal roads network in the UAE. Since July 1 2018, the MOID has implemented several technologies and developments in the federal roads network
In collaboration with the University of Sharjah, the MOID developed the 'Advanced Bridge Condition Assessment Index', a new index to help it assess and measure the condition of bridges across the country. Coordinated with the Assets Management System, the complete platform incorporates the conditions of roads and bridges, traffic counting statistical data, LIDAR detailed surveys and the performance based maintenance system, insuring the quality of the roads and highest levels of safety.
In September 2018, the MOID launched and tendered the first Public-Private Partnership contract for investments in the federal street lighting network for 40,000 streetlights. The initial feasibility study indicated energy savings of 64%, carbon savings of 37,000 carbon tones, and annual cost savings of for electricity and maintenance.
Under the increasing concern about climate change and growing construction activities, the MOID improved bridge construction standards by developing standards based on Soil Steel Composite Bridges (SSCB). The first constructed SSCB was completed in February 2019 and was a Guinness World Record for the Largest Span of a Metal Buried Bridge constructed by corrugated steel. Using this technology, beautiful arch bridges can be built without a complicated scaffolding, bearings and expansion joints that require a lot of maintenance.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development innovations have touched every construction sector in the UAE and played a big role in the UAE being number one in roads quality worldwide for 3 years. It continues its innovation in developing housing projects, governmental buildings and the highway infrastructure all around the United Arab Emirates.
