Established in 2006 by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) is aligned to the emirate’s leadership vision to develop sport and youth activities. ADSC is responsible for the management and support, scheduling, and tracking of all sports related events and entities in Abu Dhabi.
ADSC contributes towards promoting the importance of engaging in sports, and the development and improvement of sports programs, for all segments of the community. Furthermore, ADSC implements the best and latest international systems that promote competition at local, regional, and international levels.
We at ADSC have 52 sporting entities under our umbrella. The primary service offering for each of these 52 entities, is conducting events that bring the community closer.
Each entity is responsible for successfully conducting events throughout the year to engage the community and thereby, fulfil their main objective. However, while operationally the events were conducted without any issues, there were major challenges faced when reporting on event performance and its financials. This was primarily attributed to poor data governance and management across the entities.
As ADSC, we were unable to generate key insights on event management and entities’ performance in a timely manner. There was a lack of visibility on historical event performances, and on operations concerning community events. This hindered our ability to meaningfully support and impact community engagement with the entities’ events.
In order to establish guidelines and protocols to capture, document, and subsequently utilize the data in a meaningful manner, our team at ADSC thus, decided to completely overhaul the data management practices of all 52 entities under our umbrella.
Firstly, we created a centralized event management dashboard that acted as a data repository, and as a tracking and monitoring platform for events of the 52 entities. We collected all historical event data that our entities had available, and fed it to our platform. Additionally, the platform continues to collect data provided by the 52 entities on their recent and upcoming events, cleanses and normalises the data, and then visualises it as trackable KPI’s and insights. We are able to view key KPI’s and insights for all 52 entities event performance and management in real-time, allowing us to take immediate action, make recommendations, and support upcoming events at any moment in time.
Secondly, we implemented a sector-wide data management strategy that each entity would follow. We created a data management team that would operate on a sectoral level and manage the overall data flow and quality within the entire sector. Our team has, so far, achieved 85% cleanliness on overall data quality, leading to improved insights on event management, which ultimately allows us to provide better events for the community.
Thirdly, we worked intricately with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Community Development (DCD) on assisting on the data capture and reporting for community events. Since our goal behind our solution was to impact the community, working in tandem with DCD was crucial.
Our newly implemented sector-wide data management strategy and event tracking and management platform has allowed us to provide a significantly better service to our community. We are able to understand trends behind event performances and develop better informed engagement strategies, we are able to boost community satisfaction rates through increasing the transparency of operations behind event management, and the level of support and guidance we can give to our entities for events has not only increased, but it has also become a continuous practice that is not dependent on manual retrieval and analysis of data. As we expand on our data management practices, our service to our entities, and in extension to our community, will continue to be of the highest quality and standard possible.
