Nomination Title: Providing Flexibility for Women Who Want a Fair Shot at the Job Market
Describe for the judges the active measures taken by the nominated organization to enable women employees' work-life balance since the beginning of July last year (up to 525 words):
Inbound marketing and web development company Tangible Words employs women who want to work from home. Despite growing gender equality, women continue to be overwhelmingly relied upon to stay home to care for children (in 2015, 75% of non-working women were stay-at-home moms), elderly family members ( 66% of informal caregivers are women), or both. Women who choose to work from home still want to develop their skills. They need to stay current with technology and stay involved with their industry. Three-quarters of stay-at-home mothers would choose to continue working if they had flexible options, according to “ Technology, Jobs, and the Future of Work,” published by McKinsey & Company. Helping these women succeed is Tangible Words’ primary goal.
Many of Tangible Words’ staff have developed specialized knowledge in fields like manufacturing, education, SaaS, food and beverage, economic development, and tourism – and they all have a deep understanding of inbound marketing. Tangible Words arms these women with digital abilities and confidence for the new world of tech and important economic sectors, while maintaining flexible work arrangements to meet their work-life balance needs.
At Tangible Words, subcontractors are empowered to manage their own time. When priorities change, as with a sick child, staff are supported to change their work arrangements, helping reduce stress. Tangible Words gives employees the opportunity to raise their families while keeping their skills honed for their future return to the traditional workforce. And, it pays off. In 2018, Tangible Words received the HubSpot Impact Award for Integrations Innovation. They were also recently named 69th in the Top 100 Inbound Marketing Blogs, by Feedspot; listed as one of the Top Inbound Marketing Agencies in Canada by Clutch; and, named as one of the Top 10+ SEO Companies in Canada, by The Manifest.
And, Tangible Words makes working from home more than just a transition step; it provides women with the opportunity to support their families, from home, as a career option. Ceilidhe Wynn, Lead Writer for Tangible Words, left the workforce after having her first child because despite her master’s degree she was severely underemployed as an administrative assistant at a real estate agency. Since working for Tangible Words, Ceilidhe has been able to “pursue the career I’ve always wanted without having to sacrifice my commitment to my family.” Tangible Words has given her the freedom to define what “having it all” means to her. Currently, Tangible Words enables the women who run - and some who work for - the company to be the sole breadwinners for their families.
Tangible Words encourages and actively recruits women who want to work from home to have more quality time with their families. “You can always make more money, but you can’t make more time,” is the company mantra. Founders, Alysha Dominico and Vicky Marrack, practice this mantra in their professional lives but they also encourage and expect their staff to enjoy the same benefits and advantages of working from home that they do. These two female founders give back to their community of working women by providing their staff with the same opportunities, flexibility, development, and especially time, that they enjoy.
Provide a brief biography of the person or persons who lead the nominated organization (up to 125 words):
Vicky and Alysha launched Tangible Words in 2009 as a copywriting company, with Alysha as lone copywriter. Since then, the company has grown into an agency 100% focused on Inbound Marketing and Growth-Driven Website Design services. Inbound is critical for companies who plateau at $3M/a in revenue and need to grow. The basis of great inbound work is built on websites designed with content first, in mind.
