Nomination Sub Category: Community Involvement Program of the Year

Nomination Title: Protectors to Project Managers

Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated company during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):

Métier develops our own programs to provide the greatest return on investment to each philanthropic dollar investment. Within the last year, Métier developed and deployed a new philanthropic program to give back to the Washington DC community and America’s wounded veterans. The program, called Protectors to Project Managers, offers project management training, PMI certification materials, and professional development coaching to Wounded Warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to prepare them for new careers as certified project managers.

Project management was named as one of Money Magazine’s “Best Careers in America” in 2010 and was also ranked as #2 in “Hot Skills for 2011” by the Computerworld. Métier’s Protectors to Project Managers program is a way for our company to give back to our community by contributing more than just monetary donations. Instead, our program capitalizes on our deep industry knowledge to give Wounded Warriors an opportunity to jump start a new career in project management. At the same time, this program promotes return on investment, as more qualified project managers enter the workforce with the potential of finding work with the company or one of its associations.

A strong example of a Métian getting to see the impact of his work is Matt Albert, PMO site manager, for his contribution in Métier’s Protectors to Project Managers program. Matt is responsible for leading the instruction of the current Protectors to Project Managers class. As a registered Project Management Professional (PMP), Matt knows the benefits of pursuing a career in project management. Through Métier’s philanthropic program, Matt has been able to share his knowledge while making meaningful connections with America’s veterans along the way. For example, one Wounded Warrior participant in the program lost his right leg in battle. He approached Matt one day to let him know how much he was enjoying the class, and to tell him that he may be a few minutes late to the next session as he would be coming straight from a prosthesis appointment. For Matt, this conversation was worth sharing with the entire organization as it put things in perspective the hardships that the warriors face, but how much motivation they have to keep making their life better. This was exactly what the Protectors to Project Managers program was hoping to accomplish!

Métier already has plans to extend the program to other military branches next year, including Navy and Marine Service Members.
