Nomination Title: Victoria Usher, Founder and CEO

Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated entrepreneur since the beginning of July last year (up to 525 words):

Victoria Usher is an award-winning entrepreneur and working mother who has transformed the traditional PR and marketing consultancy model.

A former qualified and trained research analyst who worked with FTSE 500 companies including Microsoft and P&G, Victoria founded GingerMay in 2010 to offer businesses a commercially minded and data-driven PR and marketing partner. Victoria’s mission was to transform the way B2B businesses were viewing their communications partners from a ‘nice to have’ into a ‘must have’ component of business success.

Victoria’s approach has rocketed GingerMay to success. The communications consultancy is currently the third fastest growing in the UK and the ninth in Europe, and was crowned B2B PR Agency of the Year at the PRmoment Awards 2018. Turnover is anticipated to hit £3.2 million this year and the agency grew by 45% in 2017 in comparison to a global industry growth of 7%.

In recognition for her achievements, Victoria was awarded the accolade of Industry Leader of the Year at the PRCA Dare Awards 2018.

Victoria’s legacy in the PR and marketing industry extends further than her business acumen. Spurred on by her own experience of juggling motherhood with corporate life, Victoria is also a passionate advocate for flexible working practices for parents.

At GingerMay, Victoria has built a senior leadership team that is 85% female (in contrast to the global average of 11%) and 65% working mothers, quashing misguided perceptions that parenthood and a career cannot comfortably coexist.

Victoria provides parents with unique and versatile working arrangements, enabling them to be ambitious in their career, while also retaining a genuine work-life balance that keeps their children at the top of the priority list – where she believes they should be. In return, Victoria is rewarded with talented, working parents who are unbelievably driven and flexible in their approach to the business. Staff retention rate was an impressive 91% in 2017 and 95% of employees rate working at GingerMay PR as excellent.

Having Victoria as an employer has enabled me to follow my career ambitions while being a hands-on parent. I have the flexibility to work around my family, which was never an option in my previous roles, as do my colleagues across all levels and departments. We’re proof that Victoria’s flexible and supportive approach to business works,” commented Karolina Throssell, Senior Account Director at GingerMay, and mother to Kieran (6) and Ryan (3).

Victoria also helps young girls and women to develop their leadership skills, working within the Guide and Scouting movement, which she has been part of since an early age.

For International Women’s Day in March 2018, Victoria was invited to discuss gender disparity in the workplace on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire Show alongside her 11-year-old daughter. She sets a prime example to other industry founders, demonstrating that implementation of more adaptable working procedures is a viable and desirable business model to follow.

Victoria has since received international acclaim as an inspirational entrepreneur for her work in the communications sector and as a passionate advocate for working mums in leadership. She shares her expertise as a mentor in the Mayor’s International Business Programme for London & Partners.
