In a short four-year period, Victoria Usher has built a global powerhouse that is disrupting the communications and public relations industry. GingerMay PR is a world-leading example of a female-owned and run workplace that is accelerating past the competition and more established businesses by creating an offering that creates extraordinary levels of client and staff.
Victoria was a new mother when she founded GingerMay PR in 2010 at her kitchen table, pitching to journalists with her baby asleep in a cot by her feet, during one of the worst recessions in living memory. Times were challenging on all fronts, but Victoria was determined to offer clients a transformed PR agency model that would force long-established competitors in the space to rethink their approach. And she has successfully achieved this vision.
In May 2017, extensive research from PR Week found that GingerMay PR is the fastest growing pure-play tech PR agency in the UK. Its revenue increased by 51% in 2016 – 12 times the market average.
Profit levels are more than triple the market average. In 2016, GingerMay PR achieved a staggering 45% profit on a turnover of £1.6M, an increase of 88% on the previous year as a result of proactively reviewing its client roster and increasing opportunities across existing client accounts including opening international offices to accommodate global PR stretch. (please note, we do not want these figures published)
Word-of-mouth recommendation has driven 100% of client wins since the agency was formed. As a result, GingerMay PR has scaled at an incredible rate of between 50% and 100% growth every year.
GingerMay PR opened offices in London, New York, and Berlin in the past twelve months as a direct reaction to the needs of its international clients. Client retention is uncommonly high - in fact, the team still works with its first three clients from 2010, a level of commitment practically unheard of in the fast-moving world of PR.
Excellent staff retention is a key component in the success of the business. Rather than having a high churn that results in costs to recruit and retrain staff, GingerMay loses only around 5% of staff per year. As a result, clients benefit from a consistent, highly experienced team that have often work with the client longer than the in-house staff.
Victoria also believes strongly in retaining parents as part of the core team. Offering above-average flexible working practices – including regularly working from home and setting working hours themselves – means this extremely valuable, talented, and dedicated group don’t have to make an agonising choice over whether to pursue a career or spend quality time with their children.
A thoughtful approach from parent-focussed businesses such as GingerMay means a blended approach can easily be adopted. Overall ‘very satisfied’ levels from staff was recorded at 95% this year.
In recognition of her entrepreneurialism, Victoria was invited to be a mentor for The Mayor’s International Business Programme. In September 2016, Victoria managed the media outreach for a New York tour with Sadiq Khan, the first major post-Brexit trip by a UK politician. Victoria is now guiding leading technology companies towards achieving their business goals.
