Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated woman since the beginning of July last year (up to 525 words):
Gina Din-Kariuki is a leading communications authority, philanthropist and award-winning entrepreneur. For 20 years she has overseen the steady growth of the Gina Din Group, which has worked with brands such as Nestle, Samsung and Heineken. The Gina Din Group is the most awarded agency in the region.
In 2016-2017 Gina brought on board a diverse range of clients and projects for the Gina Din Group. This included the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Seacom, The Kenya National Examinations Council, NBA Africa Junior League and Volkswagen amongst others.
The Central Bank project involved handling media and logistics of all sixof the CBK 50th anniversary events in 2016. One of the events, the Bush Dinner at Nairobi National Park was an ‘out of the box’ idea envisioned by Gina and the Gina Din Group team as it allowed the international guests to take a break from discussing financial services to enjoy an authentic African experience with Kenyan hospitality. The main CBK at 50 events were attended by 350 guests including central bankers, dignitaries and financial experts from all corners of the globe.
In late 2016, the Gina Din Group worked with The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) as they sought to restore credibility. Due to the extra measures implemented, the examinations were granted a clean bill of health, ushering in a new era for national examinations in Kenya.
2016 concluded with Gina and the team developing and implementing a comprehensive event management strategy for the official opening of the Volkswagen Production facility in Kenya - the third Volkswagen production facility in Africa. The event was graced by 400 guests including H.E President Kenyatta.
As a powerful opinion leader Gina has lent her voice to important issues and tirelessly works toward Shaping African Conversations. She has travelled extensively to share her expertise with others at conferences and on panel discussions.
In July 2017 she penned a passionate opinion piece calling on Kenyans to unite and move towards a shared vision for the country. “We are more than our tribe,” she wrote. The article waswell received and published in two national newspapers.
In her capacity as National Honorary Ambassador to the UNFPA, Gina co-authored an article entitled When The Menstrual Cycle Becomes A Question Of Human Rights, which was published on Reuters and the Huffington Post. The article outlined the negative impact poverty and the lack of access to sanitary pads was having on adolescent girls’ education.
In June 2017 the Kenyan Government announced it would be providing free sanitary pads to Kenyan school girls.
To celebrate 20 years of the Gina Din Group, Gina conceptualised and oversaw the creative direction of the video Who Would Have Thought, which looks back at the important milestones Africa has achieved in the last 20 years. The video quickly garnered over 130,000 views on YouTube. It asks the question, 20 years ago, who would have thought Africa would go on to impact the world to this degree?
