Deanna Wise is the EVP/Chief Information Officer for Dignity Health, the fifth largest hospital provider in the United States with more than 60,000 employees. As part of the nonprofit company’s “C-suite,” Wise plays a key role in Dignity Health’s goal to remain competitive in a reformed health care system while providing values-driven patient care marked by human kindness. Wise oversees the daily operations of the IT department (approximately 1,500 IT employees and 500 contractors) and is responsible for Health Information Technology as the central tool used to transform health care delivery. Additionally, Wise’s reach and impact extends beyond Dignity Health, participating on several boards and speaking at a variety of events and conferences.
Wise is an exemplary female executive who is a role model and advocate for women. She is a people-oriented leader who demonstrates caring, compassion, and commitment while encouraging innovation, engagement, and continuous improvement. A testament to her outstanding leadership is being named one of the 2018 Best Places to Work in IT by IDG’s Computerworld (for the second consecutive year).
Wise has created an environment where IT’s expertise is leveraged to help prioritize business needs and provide state-of-the-art IT solutions. During 2017-2018, many IT projects have been implemented, including: Health Information Exchange, Enterprise Analytics, and Digital Strategy programs.
Dignity Health’s Health Information Exchange currently supports approximately 9,000 providers with data delivery, including hospital admission, discharge, transfer data, laboratory results, radiology interpretations, and other hospital-transcribed reports. This capability gives providers access to clinical summaries from other health systems and has already had a dramatic impact on the providers’ ability to care for patients based upon a more comprehensive view of their clinical history. This solution is continuing to increase utilization with an average of 500 accesses per day.
The Enterprise Analytics Program developed and deployed a Sepsis Biosurveillance Dashboard and Application. There has been a 9.7 percent year-over-year reduction in mortality for the facilities that have implemented Sepsis Biosurveillance, resulting in 290 lives saved in 2017. The Sepsis Recovery Project is in progress to develop a standardized care path aimed at enhancing the return to functional status (recovery) once resuscitation is complete. The dashboard and application was completed for all facilities in June 2018. A C-Section Reduction Dashboard, an Antibiotics Dashboard (to track and analyze prescription and usage of antibiotics, and safety data), palliative care, length of stay, and readmission risk predictive models are also under development.
Dignity Health’s Digital Strategy includes an award-winning mobile application that is the first of its kind in the health care industry. My Home has 22,814 unique users, is an easy-to-use app that helps patients find a doctor, schedule appointments, build their health team, map relevant locations, pay bills, access clinical information, and securely message their provider all in one place. My Care, the patient portal with over 517,000 patients enrolled, provides access to a person’s patient record–enabling them to view doctor’s notes, detailed clinical information, laboratory and radiology results, and securely message their health care team and get a list of current medications. Greater than 2,000 unique users are also registered for the maternity app “My Baby.”

Deanna Wise, EVP/Chief Information Officer for Dignity Health, has been in the information technology field since 1989 and health care IT since 1994. She has led the Information Technology due-diligence for numerous individual hospitals and hospital network acquisitions. Wise has a deep understanding and vast experience in the development and maintenance of industry-leading clinical IT systems. She plays a key role in Dignity Health’s Horizon 2020 goals of competing in a reformed health care system that includes industry-leading clinical information technology.
Wise oversees the full implementation of Dignity Health’s EHR software standard which brings state-of-the-art electronic records to each Dignity Health facility. She also oversees meeting meaningful use standards and is building electronic bridges between facilities and community physicians.
