Deanna Wise, EVP/CIO of Dignity Health, leads the IT department at Dignity Health, the fifth largest hospital provider in the United States. Deanna is an individual who exemplifies exceptional leadership. Not only has she led Dignity Health's IT organization through health care’s turbulent times, but she has done so with remarkable ease and grace. She tirelessly manages demanding priorities and strives to accomplish goals without losing sight of the true measure of why Dignity Health exists, namely a healing mission of “Hello humankindness.”

Several accomplishments in 2016-2017 under Deana’s oversight:

Dignity Health’s Sepsis Bio-Surveillance Program, a predictive analytics tool, is “always watching over” vital signs and key laboratory values of patients to detect changes as they are documented. This validated computer algorithm statistically identifies sepsis predictors and delivers near real-time data to caregivers so they can appropriately act on alerts and take the necessary action(s) to treat the patient. Because sepsis is responsible for over 750,000 deaths in the U.S. annually, implementing a methodology for early diagnosis and treatment is an extraordinary achievement. In a similar vein, a prenatal predictive analytic tool has been developed that notifies caregivers about the probability of highly complex fetal complications.

Dignity Health has established an affiliation in the Health Information Exchange (HIE) that facilitates access to and retrieval of clinical data, breaking down the siloes of care across numerous health systems, enhancing providers’ ability to coordinate care, empowering patients to participate in their own health care, and also assisting public health authorities in the analysis of the health of populations.

Enhanced cybersecurity, state-of-the-art EHR, and the consumer digital innovations have also been realized.

Regarding the work environment, staffing practices have changed from a predominately contractor-based IT to a FTE-based team. Deanna is a champion for remote employment and prioritizes employee engagement. Communication programs are accessible, timely, and frequent; numerous training programs and venues are provided. The vast majority of employees participate in an IT peer recognition program called Making a Difference. Employees from across the US share in the spirit of oneness and are characterized by the mantra “Separated by distance, united in purpose.”

Deanna and IT employees have given unselfishly of their time and resources back into the communities where they live. They have donated time to food banks, meals for the homeless and less-fortunate, cancer runs, canine programs, adopted families at the holidays, supported our military, donated to schools, and countless other endeavors. Deanna and IT employees are committed to leaving a positive footprint in the community.

Deanna’s reach and impact extends beyond Dignity Health. She freely shares her expertise through participation on several boards, speaking at various events and conferences, e.g. HIMSS16 “Shattering the Glass Ceiling” on the role of women in IT.

Embracing the importance of building a best–places- to- work culture, Deanna has received numerous awards for her outstanding leadership. She was recently honored in June 2017 by Computerworld for one of the top 100 Best Places to Work in IT, 2017 HDM’s Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT, 2017 Becker’s 150 Top Places to Work in HealthCare. In 2016 she received numerous awards, among them Stevie Female Executive and Stevie Female Innovator of the Year.
