The act of giving back plays a crucial role in determining the overall success of a prosperous company. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) division helps the enterprise to maintain the positive public relations and social consciences with the affected community. Rarely enough that a large mining company such as PT Adaro Energy Tbk, has the ability to successfully revolutionize more than 500,000 lives around the mines using compassion and kindness.
Meet Okty Damayanti, the iron lady behind the great success of PT Adaro Energy Tbk’s CSR programs that further reform the meaning of CSR and make it as a cornerstone to the company’s mission in developing a greater, cleaner, healthier and smarter Indonesia. Okty understands the stigma of how CSR always hinge on philanthropic endeavors. Therefore, Okty and her team formed strategies that focus more on educating and accommodating the needs of the South Kalimantan communities. Okty’s ambition for Adaro Energy is to be an example of a company that treats CSR not as a liability but as an opportunity to establish relationships with locals and makes changes to raise their life expectancy. Most of all, she uses CSR as a gear for Adaro to be valued highly in the business industry. Reconstructing the company’s CSR help the business achieve prosperity in a way that it makes the image of the company more appealing to shareholders and potential investors.
Okty hears the local’s concern and launched specific need-based programs that are run by the local communities to which it could be autonomous in the long run. According to the result of Basic Health Research in 2012, 64% of the population of Tabalong area does not have a proper access to sanitation. Okty saw this opportunity to work with the locals and promote a habit of clean living. By involving those in a Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) program, Okty has managed to establish Open Defecation Free plans to villages in Tabalong, Balangan, and Barito Timur. Until 2017, CSR Adaro Energy has managed to supervise over 43 villages (2,000 households or 8,000 people) in those 3 districts and is declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) by the Ministry of Health lowering the province percentage of the population with non-proper access to sanitation by 17%, as reported by Statistics Indonesia. Currently, Okty and her team working are with the government to launch a sanitation program that will make Tabalong fully ODF by 2019.
Okty’s work has won 78 awards since 2012 from national and international competitions, including winning Global CSR Awards in Best CSR Leadership 2018. This proves the result of cultivating local communities around Adaro’s operational areas is recognized. In total there are over 85 programs that she has conducted in these 6 years under Adaro Foundation. In 2017 itself, Adaro Energy as a company won a staggering 49 awards and 28 of them are won by CSR. As a leader who inspires and committed to excellence, she continues to revolutionize Indonesia with her act of compassion and kindness. Damayanti will keep on spreading a positive impact on the local community because her passion lies in developing a greater, healthier, cleaner and smarter Indonesia.

Okty Damayanti was born in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 30, 1966. Married to Mr. Supriyanto, Okty are blessed with two lovely children Hanif and Diva. Graduated from Bogor Agricultural Institute in 1988, she started her career as Management Trainee in Unilever. In 2003, Okty and her colleagues founded the Philanthropy Indonesia Association (PFI), a non-profit organization that aims to contribute to social justice and sustainable development, and still an active member of the association until now. From 2004, Okty was appointed as General Manager of Unilever Peduli Foundation and part of BoD for Unilever Foods Division in PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk.In 2012, Okty became a member of PT Adaro Energy Tbk. as the Head of CSR Division and Director of Adaro Foundation until now.
