Nomination Title: Sales Representative of the Year - Ashley Shiwarski - Educating through Awareness, Providing Solutions to Customer Needs

Tell the story about what this nominee achieved since the beginning of July 2016 (up to 650 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

Ashley Shiwarski is one of HomeServe’s most effective sales representatives because she is not selling anything. Since August, 2014, Ashley has been meeting with city officials to share information about the NLC Service Line Warranty Program. Formerly a math teacher, Ashley’s passion is education and helping others. In her role, Ashley is motivated by the opportunity to share information with cities that can help educate homeowners about their responsibility for their water and sewer lines and protect them from unanticipated and often expensive repairs that can have a serious impact on their finances.

One recent example was the City of Van Meter, Iowa. A resident had a water line break and she was completely shocked to find out that she was responsible to fix the line and the cost would exceed $4,000. The resident told her story at a city council meeting, which prompted the City to seek out a solution. This particular case touched Ashley because the city council members wanted to help the resident, and even considered changing the ordinance and covering those types of repairs. However they quickly realized that the City budget would never be able to absorb that expense without raising water rates. The City of Van Meter considered this program to be the ideal solution and Ashley was glad she could help them to implement it so that no other resident would be blindsided by this problem.

In another example, Rochester, Minnesota, Ashley connected with a concerned resident, explained the program and, as a result, he spoke during the public comments of their Council meeting about all of the reasons why the City should adopt the program. After that, Ashley was able to work through any concerns with the City Council President and he became an advocate of the program as well.

Ashley’s role includes working closely with state and national government organizations, mayors and government staff. She presents at public council meetings and at state and national conferences to promote the program. Ashley also helps to manage existing municipal relationships with partner cities to ensure and maintain a positive relationship.

Ashley has been in this role three years. She has been the number one sales representative for the NLC Service Line Warranty Program for the last two years and she is poised to be in the number one position for a third year in a row. To date, residents of 112 cities are receiving valuable education and protection as a result of Ashley’s efforts. In the past three years there have been 739 repair jobs in those partner cities, saving residents over $530,000.

In addition to her educational approach, Ashley is a consummate professional who is well prepared before each call. City officials appreciate her in depth knowledge of their specific issues and this helps her to build trust by offering meaningful solutions for their residents.

Ashley has also mentored and trained numerous sales representatives in her approach to educating and sharing information with cities. She is a true role model to her peers and they all agree that her passion for helping others comes through on every interaction with her prospects.

Aside from her career, Ashley dedicates significant personal time in service to others. She is an active volunteer in the Pittsburgh, PA chapter of Best Buddies. Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping them form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public speaking, self-advocacy and communication skills, and feel valued by society.

Ashley is a recipient of HomeServe’s 2017 President’s award, recognizing exceptional employees.

HomeServe is proud to have employees like Ashley who truly put the customer at the heart of everything they do.
