Sea vessels are accident-prone, in events such as poor visibility or personnel falling overboard.
ADNOC Logistics and Services (ADNOC L&S) is the largest integrated shipping and maritime logistics company in the UAE and GCC region with diverse fleet operating in 65 ports, 50+countries, 6 continents.
The HSE Team in coordination with IT and Operations Teams, designed, engineered, installed, implemented Artificial Intelligence “SMART-VESSELS” on 80+ Offshore Support Vessels (OSV) operating between six ports in UAE, by utilizing the CCTVs onboard, deploying sensors, installing trip wires, intelligent video analytics to detect multiple violations, events or threats, onboard the ships.
SMARTi is first of its kind in the UAE and GCC region.
The innovative AI system adopted to international maritime standards, triggered 50000+ alarms violations and incidents, namely,
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) violations;
Surveillance events,
HSE incidents such as man overboard, slips, trips and falls, unsafe acts, unsafe conditions,
Swell levels; thus enabling vessels in a proactive mode,
As well as offering real-time surveillance, enhanced safety and security, operational efficiency and powerful reporting.
The significant decline in HSE violations demonstrated 100%HSE performance, achieved all HSE targets i.e. ZERO fatalities, catastrophic events, environmental incidents, security incidents.
Enhancing Culture of Care for every person onboard every vessel.
Proof of Concept (POC) was built for one vessel with installation, configuration, testing, commissioning, and end user operator training.
Smart sensors measured indicators: speed overground, sea state, rudder direction, wind speed, temperature, sound velocity, fuel flow, shaft torque, shaft RPM, abnormal system, machinery behavior, etc.
Deploying wireless mobile terminals and high-speed Internet connections onboard vessel, dynamic Data (live views, photos, videos, graphics, GPS data) was collected from the vessel’s onboard surveillance camera technologies and associated ecosystems.
Installing navigation aids, applying augmented reality, enhanced perception of reality providing full and immersive user experience for ship navigation.
Assigning virtual trip wire lines integrated to the PA system. Utilizing already-built infrastructure, unused raw vessel data, installed hardware surveillance cameras and IT components, we re-designed vessel dashboard with intelligent video analytics.

Results
- Compliance to maritime regulations
- Significant reduction to incidents and injuries - providing safe working environment by detecting abnormal behaviors promptly, eliminating accidents to human error, mitigating risks in unfavorable climatic conditions.
- Promotes 100%HSE culture enhancing safety of seafarers’ onboard vessels, by detecting unsafe behaviors, worksite hazards and inadequate HSE supervision.
- Enhances navigation and security
- IMO’s Strategic Plan 2018-2023 “Integrate new technologies” and ADNOC’s expansion business plan, SMARTi added value to our stakeholders
- Detecting swell height levels using inclinometer sensor, movements of vessel and classified the condition of the sea accordingly based on a pre-defined threshold Red (alarming), Yellow (warning), Green (normal), significantly improved vessel navigation safety
- Enhanced decision-making capability: Analyzing weather patterns, during navigation and berthing, safe sailing, reducing costs, further boosting the maritime sector’s competitiveness
- Elevating the role of command control centre communicating and controlling multiple vessels, better decision-making, reduced operating costs and better utilization of resources.
