Nomination Title: Virtusa’s Smart Digital Health Advisor powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Tell the story about this nominated product or service (up to 650 words). Describe its function, features, benefits, and performance to date.

With the rise in healthcare costs, payers and providers grapple with care delivery to patients in a cost effective manner. Digital solutions have become the new normal in this scenario. While there are multiple point solutions which help patients, providers, and payers at various touch points, there isn’t an integrated solution to addresses all the gaps in patients’ journey, helping them go through it effortlessly. With increasing adoption of digital technologies and rise in consumerism, Virtusa created an integrated Connected Digital Health platform called “Hope” in 2017 to help patients, providers, and payers. Leveraging our digital innovation capabilities coupled with IBM Watson Cognitive Platform, we built this intuitive health advisor powered by Artificial Intelligence to help members experience a smooth, frictionless journey.

This integrated solution helps the four key entities in the healthcare ecosystem- Patients (members), payers, providers, and pharma/device solution providers:

Patients: Hope is a companion & coach in their healthcare journey. If they’re healthy and trying to track health progress, Hope becomes their guide, integrating with popular fitness trackers to keep them on track with their goals & connect them directly with their healthcare providers to receive recommendations on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If one has a serious medical issue, Hope can also help track their condition through integration with medical devices & sensors and alert their healthcare provider of potential issues before they require a trip to the emergency room. Hope also makes it easier to maintain your lifestyle by integrating directly with your automated home including smart thermostats, lights, home entertainment, etc. providing you with the ability to speak commands directly to an Amazon echo (or similar device).

Payers: Hope benefits both group plan & individual plan delivery models. It promotes wellness by tracking subscribers’ health progress and leveraging concepts like gamification for motivation. Hope becomes a part of members’ daily life where they can log activity, integrate with fitness trackers, and even health sensors as needed to track progress against goals. This benefits the payers by promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing/preventing long term care issues such as diabetes, heart conditions, etc. that come from an unhealthy lifestyle. Payers can incentivize utilization through rate discounts and/or building a marketplace ecosystem with other health providers like gyms, etc. to promote utilization of the system.

Provider/Healthcare Delivery: This digital health advisor is leveraged to improve patient outcomes for those suffering from long term, debilitating illnesses and provide them with a companion to get back on the path to wellness. Hope helps in home care. The system integrates with medical sensors such as EKG, remote dialysis machines, heart rate monitors, glucose meters, etc. to provide healthcare systems with the ability to remotely monitor patients and couples artificial intelligence with Internet of Things (IoT) to enable remote monitoring by doctors & case managers. It also provides real time alerts during emergency issues, ideally capturing them before a trip to the hospital or ER is required. This allows health care providers to increase case-loads thus decreasing the cost of healthcare delivery. It also enables doctors to directly connect with patients using chat via the companion health care provider app and telepresence for remote care sessions providing a streamlined patient experience.

Life Sciences – Pharma & Device providers can leverage Hope to extend their delivery network into one’s home. It can integrate directly with Bluetooth LE based medical devices to provide remote control applications for Class III implantable devices providing delivery of pain medication, sensors to track information in real time and use AI & Machine Learning (ML) to provide real time analytics to healthcare providers, etc.. Hope also promotes medical adherence & helps patients achieve better health outcomes. The power of IoT and AI are leveraged to make recommendations to patients, track dosage and integrated with the companion healthcare provider app, it works with healthcare providers to manage cases, alerting them to things like missed dosage, over-dosage, etc.
