PJ Lhuillier president & CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier is known as one of the Philippines’ leading names in the business industry. Widely-respected and highly-regarded as a visionary, risk-taker and a businessman with a good heart, Mr. Lhuillier is known as the man behind the country’s number one microfinancial services provider and also as an avid sportsman and philanthropist.
In 1998, Mr. Lhuillier took the helm of Cebuana Lhuillier, PJ Lhuillier’s flagship brand and then the number one pawnshop chain in the Philippines from his father, PJ Lhuillier Chairman Philippe Jones Lhuillier, now the Ambassador of the Philippines to the Kingdom of Spain. Since taking the leadership, Mr. Lhuillier ushered the well-known pawnshop chain to become the country’s leading microfinancial services provider.
Through his leadership, Cebuana Lhuillier introduced new products and business innovations; increased its network in the Philippines to 2,200 branches, 4,000 domestic partner outlets and about 1M virtual and physical touchpoint of international partners. By doing so, he ensured that every day Filipinos, mostly from the unbanked and underbanked sector, will have access to the financial resources that they need, when they need it – regardless of their location or social status.
After Cebuana Lhuillier has marked its 30th year in the business with a year-long celebration in 2017, Mr. Lhuillier is setting his sights on bringing his commitment to financial inclusion to the 21st century, by pushing for financial technology, making the company one of the earliest adopters in FinTech in the local microfinancial industry. To date, Cebuana Lhuillier is now reaping the benefits of using Application Programming Interface (API), which serves as the foundation of an efficient and seamless business gateway between the company and its more than 450 partners across various industries.
Mr. Lhuillier’s commitment to excellence and passion for service extends beyond the corporate world.
He also serves as the Honorary Consul General of the Republic of San Marino to the Philippines, actively promoting a healthy bi-lateral relationship between the Philippines and San Marino. In recognition of his service and in appreciation of his philanthropic works, he was made an Official Knight of the Equestrian Order of Saint Agatha, Republic of San Marino.
Mr. Lhuillier believes in giving back to the community. Aside from his goal of making every Filipino financially included through Cebuana Lhuillier and its services, he also supports advocacy programs for education and sports.
Mr. Lhuillier also strived to make a difference in the live of Filipinos through his advocacies. Through the Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc., the company’s corporate social responsibility arm, Mr. Lhuillier was able to open more Alternative Learning System centers in the country, raising the total to 73, and benefitting more than 6,500 learners. He also initiated the offering of financial literacy crash courses in more than 525 communities nationwide.
He is also firmly committed in the promotion of disaster resilience, spearheading the company’s very own disaster response team called Cebuana RAPIDO during the 2017 Ready Disaster Resilience Forum. So far, Cebuana RAPIDO has extended help to 50 families, 1,500 evacuees, and thousands more in major missions in Iligan, Surigao, and in war-torn Marawi in Southern Philippines.
Mr. Lhuillier is also an avid sportsman and supporter of Philippine athletes. He is currently the president of Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL), as well as the Unified Tennis Philippines (UTP) where he provides opportunities and support to Filipino athletes to compete at the world stage.
