MEGAWORLD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: BUILDING HOMES, BUILDING LIVES

From the perspective of once a scholar who wakes up early to walk to school and goes home late from the library to borrow books and study, Dr. Andrew L. Tan, now Chairman and CEO of leading real-estate developer, Megaworld Corporation, personally believes that people of humble birth who are given an opportunity at a good education have a chance to change their lives for the better.

For almost 20 years now, Megaworld Foundation has been dedicated to uphold this vision by giving the underprivileged Filipinos a chance to a better life with the power of education. Through the Foundation, this same vision has enabled Megaworld to transcend from building homes to building lives.

EDUCATION BUILDING

Megaworld Foundation dedicates most of its efforts in empowering literacy. It has built classrooms, dormitory, day care centers, refurbished libraries, donated boats that ferry students from their home, and gave books and supplies to schools across the country.

Of all this, Megaworld Foundation considers its Scholarship Program as its flagship initiative. It helps students who live in humble homes, have minimum wage earner parents, and some are even working already to help support their families’ daily needs. These same students, no matter how humble their backgrounds are, are bright and have big dreams in life.

Starting with just eight scholars in its first year, the Foundation now provides tuition and miscellaneous fees, school supplies, and allowances to 350 high school and college students annually. These students are enrolled in 45 premier partner schools in the National Capital Region and nearby provinces. As of 2017, the Foundation has given more than 5,800 scholarship grants and celebrated the achievements of over 470 graduates –half of which graduated with honors.

CHARACTER BUILDING

Megaworld Foundation believes that educating the heart is as important as educating the mind. Thus, aside from supporting the scholars’ school expenses, it also involves them in various seminars and activities that will contribute to their holistic growth.

Starting from the “Scholars’ Orientation” that introduces newly accepted scholars to the advocacies of the Foundation and Megaworld Corporation, they are also invited to explore Megaworld’s different project sites through the “Scholars’ Tour”. The Foundation then inculcates the “pay it forward” culture by providing them opportunities to be ambassadors in the partnership-building program as well as to be volunteers in feeding, tree planting, and activities for a cause.

The Foundation also takes time to acknowledge the hard work and perseverance of the graduating scholars through an annual “Cap Toss: Send-off Ceremony”. This event also serves as an avenue for alumni scholars to pay it forward to the next generation by being event speakers as they inspire them with professional etiquette and values along with a career advisement seminar.

NATION BUILDING

In pursuit to provide a better future for the scholars, Dr. Tan’s companies under Alliance Global Group, Inc. (AGI) provides career opportunities through Megaworld Foundation. The Foundation supports courses such as engineering, accountancy, human resource, information technology, architecture, interior design, and business, for these are related to AGI’s line of business.

By the end of 2017, the Foundation has helped alleviate the lives of 321 scholars who have joined the workforce. These scholars continue to join the Foundation’s charitable endeavors as employee-volunteers and attend the Values-driven Leadership Seminar to further equip them with the values they must uphold as professionals.

Every year, more and more underprivileged Filipino youth are given the opportunity to receive quality education and to use it as a key to succeed in life. This has been and will always be the ultimate goal of Megaworld Foundation. To date, it has not just fulfilled its goal but has built the lives of every family it has helped, every scholar graduated, every school built and rebuilt, and the story will go on as it continually pursues its mission in improving the lives of the Filipino people.

EDUCATION BUILDING
-The Scholarship Program expanded by supporting scholars from two more universities in the National Capital Region on top of its 43 partner schools.
-Scholarship grants were afforded to Senior High School students to support Department of Education’s K-12 Program.
-Graduate scholar tops the Certified Public Accountant licensure exam.

CHARACTER BUILDING
-Megaworld Foundation President toured scholars in the award-winning LEED-certified headquarters of Megaworld.
-Scholars volunteered in their first distribution of emergency kits for disaster preparedness.
-Scholar-initiated “Santa Scholars Gift-giving Activity” doubled its involvement rate and reach compared to its launch in 2016.
-Hired scholar received Megaworld’s “TORCH Award” for exemplary employees upholding integrity to the highest professional standard.

NATION BUILDING
-100% of the graduate scholars were given employment opportunities in Megaworld, its subsidiaries, and affiliates.
-Alumnus scholar, now double-license engineer, delivered his Loyalty Service Award speech during Megaworld’s corporate Christmas Party
