Nomination Title: Creative Department for LASERVISION - IMAGINE at Dubai Festival City
Tell the story about what this nominated department has achieved since 1 January 2016 (up to 650 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms.
In July of 2016, Laservision's creative team were successful in securing two creative briefs to supply, design and program two amazing spectaculars—‘Stardancer’ and ‘A Child’s Dream’— for Dubai's largest permanent Mega Media attraction; IMAGINE at Dubai Festival City Mall. The creative team worked tirelessly on the completion of two Premiere Spectaculars and three dynamic fountain shows that were to be played daily and nightly when IMAGINE opened to the public on December 26th, 2016.
With an accelerated timeline; productions running in parallel and launched within months of one another; a relatively small team of 15 artists, compositors, 3D-modelers, and creative managers and directors; Laservision's creative department provided the world with a Guinness record setting attraction and new industry benchmark for multimedia spectaculars.
Laservision’s creative team combined water, light, high-definition video projection, surround-sound and flame effects around an all new immersive stage set within Festival Bay and extending onto the InterContinental Hotel. These world record setting projections allowed the creative team to produce beautiful and vibrant imagery at an enormous scale. World-class video-mapping projections take central focus on the entire south-side façade of the InterContinental Hotel producing an ultra-high-definition(UHD) projection surface, four-and-a-half times larger than the world’s largest IMAX screen.
Laservision’s creative team had many challenges to solve for such a large-scale production. One of the first challenges they were presented with were the multiple audience viewing angles around the property.
The challenge for both productions was designing narratives that could be easily understood from these multiple perspectives, simultaneously, both visually and acoustically. It was a goal to have each viewing area tell different parts of the narrative while syncing with the main audio being distributed around the attraction and something which Laservision or the industry has never tried before with Multimedia spectaculars of this size. This approach also created incentive for repeat visitation to the attraction as patrons wanted to see a new aspect of the production as they explored the mall and F&B offerings.
Another challenge was to create standardised visual content that would register well on both the solid surfaces of the InterContinental projection as well as the projections on the fluid surface of the 6 water screens throughout the bay. The different mediums render quite differently when projected on and the creative team spent many weeks and programming sessions tunning, colour grading, and editing the shots to work, not only on each individual asset, but seamlessly transition from one asset to the next and create a truly immersive space for Festival Bay.
After many sleepless nights creating and programming the show, and lots of travel to principal photography shoots, casting calls, and regional office meetings, the creative team at Laservision have provided Dubai Festival City Mall a one-of-a-kind attraction that continues to deliver, both day and night, an amazing and record-setting attraction for Dubai.
