On May 16th, 2017, Korea Seven Co.,Ltd.(K7) opened 7-Eleven Signature which is the World First Unmanned Convenience Store which Biometric Payment System is applied.
7-Eleven Signature is the convergence of 7 cutting-edge technologies: Unmanned POS, Biometric Verification Gate, Electronic Shelf Label, Digital Cigarette Vending Machine, Automatic Open and Closing Showcase, Smart CCTV, Digital Signage. This store has been spotlighted in more than 40 broadcasting reports and 600 newspaper articles. And many interested parties from various countries have visited to witness the unmanned convenience store which is leading the 4thindustrialrevolution.
7-Eleven Signature registered 4 patents in South Korea and has applied patents in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and U.S. so this will make the first example on export of techniques in the Korean retail industry.
The second 7-Eleven Signature was opened in February of 2018 and the third and the forth are going to be opened within this year. Moreover, K7 is facing the commercialization of the unmanned convenience store model by planning to open an unmanned convenience store for gas station in partnership with Hyundai Oilbank Co..
1. Unmanned POS
There was no efficient barcode machine which could scan products automatically in South Korea. So K7 tested an X-shaped scanner that could scan 360 degrees from Italy. The scanner’s scan function was good but the number of products that could be scanned was limited. To solve it, we developed a shelf with a conveyor belt and combine the shelf with the barcode machine adding payment system. When customer approaches near the POS, its sensor operates conveyor belt and once customer puts products on the side of the belt, the products automatically go through the 360 degree Scanner and go to the other side where the customer can pay the price and put the products into plastic bag. We additionally attached a sensor which can prevent products from being mixed when other customer puts products before the former finishes payment process by showing green/red light. When other customer is on the payment process, it shows red light to the waiting customer and it shows green light if the machine is available.
Payment process is also simple. Customer can pay the price by putting hand on the Hand-pay machine. Hand-Pay is a vein verification payment service which identifies user by patterns and links to his/her credit card information so that user can pay for products easily. Registration process is simple as well. Users easily can register at the registration booth.
2. Store Access and Adult certification
Making an unmanned concept possible, Visitor verification and Adult certification for cigarette sales were needed. Installing the verification gate linked with Hand-pay system at the entrance, customer can enter the store without any pass and we can prevent the theft of goods. And we decided to use vending machine for cigarettes for its convenience. Lotte E&M Co. developed the vending machine combining Hand-Pay system for adult certification with a large screen allows customers to choose cigarettes.
3.Technologies for increasing store operation efficiency
Besides POS, payment/verification method, there are various technologies as well. First, the Smart CCTV detects and records only the movement of a person, and also provides customer counting data and data about highly crowded area. Also, a warning pop-up is displayed when any movement is detected during off-hours (23: 00 to 07: 00) and when smoke or flame occurs.
Using Electronic Shelf Label makes it possible to change the price at once and it can be applied to various fields such as inventory management, services using QR code, NFC, and it strengthens mobile/Omni-channel service, maximizing store operation efficiency.
Finally, we developed an automatic opening and closing showcase that opens when the customer pushes a button, increasing customer convenience and reducing the loss of cooling energy by 30%. In addition, we provide various PR information to customers via digital signage on the front side of store, staffs don’t have to make POP.
