The Telehealth, which is a major vehicle for delivering timely care, is emerging as a critical component of the healthcare and acts as a crisis solution. Telehealth has significant impact on some of the most challenging problems of our current healthcare system like; access to care, cost effective delivery, and distribution of limited providers.

Dubai Health Authority would like to share the innovative experience of using Telemedicine technologies through implementation of the project on SMART HEADACHE CLINIC. This is the first clinic, which functions at its best in the health care practice in Emirate of Dubai under the umbrella of Dubai Health Authority and the first health care organization to use ROBODOC as an important device in diagnosis and management of various diseases within an extreme shorter timeframe than usual.

The innovative initiative in line with the information security management standards ISO 27001, was based on the community need as well due to increase in the statistics of the community members who are suffering from headache and long waiting time, which required the development of a service that is smart with least cost. This would help reduce the long waiting time as well as increase in the customer satisfaction rate.

The ROBODOC device is an excellent device that aided greatly in implementing the remote consultation as well as the multidisciplinary approach in connecting the client directly with his treating specialist in order to get the optimal management plan and help relieve and control their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

During the implementation of the SMART HEADACHE CLINIC, more than 100 patients were seen in the clinic, which had led to a significant reduction in the waiting time, by 20-25%. On the other hand, there was a remarkable increase in the client’s satisfaction rate of more than 90% measured by a survey conducted among the customers, and a score of 98 % in the indicator of the customer trust in the health center services through the customer happiness survey. Recently added to this another telemedicine modality of digital retinal camera screening and uploading image on the electronic file system for the specialists to view and manage patient’s conditions.

The medical staff in the health care centers were trained on innovation in health care as well on using the telehealth technologies in health care. A specific taskforce was formed with a team of well-qualified and skilled staff, to manage and facilitate the implementation of telehealth modalities in health care so that the cost of the implementation of the project would be minimal and to re-use the existing resources to provide additional services to the end-users with the best and possible outcome.

The project of the SMART HEADACHE CLINIC was a huge success due to the effective collaboration between the Primary Health Care Services Sector, IT department and Neurology department from the secondary care facilities in Dubai.

We trust using Telemedicine technologies in health care holds the promise to greatly impact some of the most challenging problems of our current healthcare system. It can help;

• Remote patients to obtain clinical services more easily,

• Remote health centers to provide emergency and intensive care services,

• Reduced mortality rates,

• Reduce complications,

• Reduce extended travel to obtain necessary care reduces the related carbon footprint,

• Reduced hospital stays or high cost on hospital visits,

• Reduce cost of patient transfers for stroke and other emergencies,

• Improves support for patients and families,

• Improves organizational productivity:

• Telehealth retinopathy screening programs support early identification of serious eye disease and reduce the incidence of blindness in diabetic patients.

Overall, Telehealth can change the current paradigm of care and allow for improved access and improved health outcomes in cost effective ways.
