Dubai 3D Printing Strategy, launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aims to make Dubai a global capital of 3D printing technologies by 2030.

The primary Goal of Dental Services at Dubai Health Authority is to provide high quality and comprehensive dental healthcare services provided by dental healthcare professionals through effective utilization of the latest advancements in dental equipment. In the field of health care, wherein some solutions have to be adapted to assist and ease the clients, attempts are made to introduce newer technologies.

One of which is for the dental clients for issues related to dental restoration. Typically, prosthesis or implants have to match with the patient’s morphology as it is different between individuals and through 3D model of the patient’s dentition, dental restoration, with solutions can be totally adapted to the patient.

Dental 3D is an easy way to get customized items and it is a cost-effective and time-saving method. It incorporates Intra oral Scanning, CAD CAM Scanning and 3D Printing. Using this technology will allow dentists to simply scan the teeth using an intra-oral scanner, which will create a digital impression (image).This image is then sent across to the 3D printing machine through the intranet from different Dental Clinics within DHA, which then replicates the image as a 3D model. It helps doctors for accurate planning and precision especially for complicated dental procedures and surgeries, and clients will greatly benefit from the use of this technology as it helps better patient outcomes as well as substantially reduce waiting time and cost of care. Dentists also benefit from 3D printing and imaging. Imaging files are far easier to store than bulky plaster casts.

As the 3D printer technology becomes more accessible, the cost of use is going down. Patients can have these procedures performed at prices comparable to traditional methods, and these costs will continue to decrease as 3D printer prices decrease.

A part of strategic plans of the organization implemented the latest in innovation, which is 3D dental technology, was considered and the reasons for this approach were:

As a client receiving services through 3D Dental Technology shall receive precision dental impressions instantly; reduce visit and waiting time for dental services and feel comfortable with the Impression technique.

As a provider for 3D Dental Technology shall ensure reduce risk of cross infection; ensure easier way of taking precise dental impressions than using conventional impression technqiues; ensure appropriate design, methods are used which can be easily reproduced; ensure reduction in repetitions of taking dental impressions and ensure client happiness through avoiding discomfort.

As an organization providing 3D Dental Technology shall avoid using the plaster room required due to digital impressions; reduce overcrowding of patients, handle multiple cases in a short time with minimal materials; ensure continuous operation of services with limited staff involvement and ensure minimal storage facilities required for service.

In conclusion, of the importance of 3D dental technology, it is required to understand that conventional process of fabricating 1 dental cast model takes an average time of 1.4 Hours, whereas 3D printing systems are able to produce 18 Arches within 6 hours (average of 20 minutes per arch) and minimal hands - on work by the Dental personnel. In 2017, 5000 patients benefitted from dental 3D printing this number will significantly increase in 2018 as 12 primary health care centers will be providing the service.
