Nomination Title: College Works Painting

Tell the story about what this nominated organization has achieved since 1 January 2017 (up to 650 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms.

Since January 1st, 2017, College Works has hired over 2,000 college students and gave them the opportunity to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams by running their own businesses. College Works hires high-achieving university students and trains them on the basics of managing a business from start to finish. Each selected student manager oversees the marketing, sales, production management and customer relations of a house-painting business in their hometown. Interns are provided with the tools, training, systems, support, licenses, and insurance necessary to manage a successful painting business during the summer. The requirements are confidence, leadership skills, and motivation. Student earnings range from $2,500 to $50,000.

Participating students emerge from the experience with a greater understanding of what it takes to run a successful business, and with a competitive edge that sets them apart in a widening field of job applicants after graduation. We’re building a stronger workforce, better prepared to create a stronger economy. 96% of our interns are able to get a job within 6 months of graduating in an industry average of 63%.

One of our biggest achievements this year was being ranked as the #4 Best Internship in Career Development and #32 Best Overall Internship nationwide by Vault.com. Vaults main mission is to provide the intelligence that students and professionals need to build the careers they want, and to partner with companies seeking to engage with people pursuing high-potential careers. We simultaneously received the Best of Houzz Service Award for the 3rd year running, being rated at the highest level for client satisfaction by the Houzz community with hundreds of customer reviews. This speaks volumes to our goal to not just be the premier leadership experience for college students but to also ensure our students are providing the best possible service.

Despite always working with a 1st-year managerial team, College Works remained the largest privately held residential house painting company in the country this past year. Our students, working for only six months of the year, worked with over 7,850 homeowners across the United States with a customer service rating of 92% in an industry that averages 43%. This brings us to over 150,000 total homes painted!

Because we hire college students, there is a lot of seasonal hiring that must take place. The obstacles we must overcome: how do we rehire, train, inspire, manage, and provide a great finished product to our customers with new interns each year?

Our solution has always been to hire great leaders from within to train our new employees and manage the business. But one of our biggest innovations this year has been in the further systemization of our safety program, sales process, and improvements to our client management tool. Being so spread out, 28 states from coast to coast, it’s always been a challenge to systemize how we provide our services to employees and clients. We created a robust intranet site, in-house, (recognized by Inc. Magazine in the “Inc. Magazine Web Awards) that generates reports enabling our executive team to hone in on all issues, providing customized support to every employee. This tracking and management tool has considerably decreased the time it takes to train employees on how to become excellent managers, proficient at sales, and more efficient with their time in the field.

We improved our site and systemizations in 2017 so much that it allowed us to branch out and expand our client services to not just exterior house painting but interior house painting and carpentry for the 2018 season!

Safety on jobsites has always been a huge priority for us. This last season we implemented several new processes that decreased our jobsite injuries to a historic company low. We’ve improved our safety track record annually, decreasing injuries by 85% over the last 4 years. We continue to aim for our goal of running the safest house painting company in the nation.
