The Castle Group produced Family Reach Foundation’s second annual Imagine Session. Uniting stakeholders from across the healthcare spectrum and beyond, this think-tank style event was designed to elevate awareness of the financial toxicity of cancer, and generate collaborative and innovative solutions to this national problem. Family Reach is a national nonprofit dedicated to alleviating the financial burden of cancer. Working with more than 200 hospitals and cancer centers nationwide, Family Reach provides immediate financial assistance, education and navigation to families before they hit critical breaking points.
Castle was tasked to develop and execute a daylong experience that would allow attendees to experience the real emotion and pain that is felt when a family member is afflicted with cancer. The goal was to engage a wide audience of financial stakeholders, caregivers, survivors, legislators, healthcare professionals, business executives and philanthropists in the mission. The challenge was how to get attendees to think big—and achieve this result on a very limited budget.
Castle managed all aspects of the event working in a donated space, including registration, food and beverage, vendor selection, securing esteemed panelists, graphics and AV, content for each panel/session and an evening cocktail reception (see attached production schedule). Speakers in attendance represented organizations including Lyft New England, Harrison & Star, Taurus Investment Holdings, Bank of America, Needham Bank, Cancer Support Community, CancerCare, Children’s Hospital Orange County and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Sessions throughout the day included “Financial Barriers: The Patient & Caregiver Experience” with a panel of patients and caregivers; “Big Data: The Full Scope of Financial Toxicity;” a panel on patient resources; a hands-on collaborative working session; round table discussion surrounding “the solution;” and finally a cocktail reception hosted by Celebrity Chef Ming Tsai, president of the Family Reach National Advisory Board and owner of restaurant Blue Dragon.
The hands-on collaborative workshop titled “The Patient & Caregiver Journey,” was a unique, immersive session that took attendees through a simulated experience. Participants received a set of cards outlining a specific cancer diagnosis and its financial implication. With a ding of a bell, attendees then chose news cards such as “partner loses job,” to mirror real world scenarios that followed the cancer journey. Participants were then tasked with making the difficult decisions that families burdened by cancer make every day.
Castle has orchestrated exclusive events from 50 to 10,000 people with bespoke experiences all over the world. We are proud, however, of this effort as it resulted in movement toward work that will actually help solve the problems faced by families in need.
As a result, Family Reach has a new board member Peter Merrigan, CEO and co-founder of Taurus, who will focus on creating new legislation in the mortgage industry for families undergoing cancer treatment The event was so successful that Family Reach plans to take the Imagine Session think-tank on the road, replicating it in 2018 in Boston, MA and Dallas, TX
