Tell the story about what this nominated executive has achieved since 1 January 2016 (up to 650 words). Describe the impact he or she has had on your organization. Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms.
Burdge & Associates Architects, Inc. is an architectural, planning and consulting firm based in Malibu, California. BAA specializes in the design of distinguished residential, and commercial projects throughout North America. Douglas Burdge has become the preeminent architect of Malibu, having designed and built over 200 projects in the region, for notable clients including entertainment moguls, and Fortune 500 CEOs. Sophisticated homebuyers commission BAA, knowing that working with BAA will result in a distinctive coastal home that reflects their individual personality.
In 2016, Burdge completed a stunning renovation of a 6,345 square foot residence in Malibu, CA. The client, Brent Hocking – founder of the luxury liquor brand DeLeon Tequila (which sold to Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs and Diageo in 2013) and current owner of Virginia Black Whiskey with Drake – wanted a home on par with Los Angeles’ hottest nightclubs, where he’s spent much of his time thanks to his thriving business. The home was planned in an all-black color scheme; polished black floors, black leather furniture, dark walls in every room and dark countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms. The result was spectacular – even with the dark color scheme, the home is full of natural light and a sense of activity and life. Architectural aspects of the home were opened up, including walls both within the home and those that connect to the outside. The entire back wall of the living area opens up to the backyard, with bright green artificial grass, a sparkling blue pool and blue tennis court. Doug made sure that the skyline was visible when you walk in the front door, something not always possible in mountainous areas or single level residences.
In another impressive project, Burdge designed an award-winning custom home on MariSol’s oceanfront bluffs. The dramatic entrance is flanked by tropical landscaping and art leading to walls of glass that open out to an infinity pool and views of the Pacific Ocean. This jaw dropping home also has a private sandy beach, rooftop putting green, outdoor cabanas, movie theater and gym. Most contemporary homes rely on bold forms and stark spatial relationships; this home dares to peel back its silky skin to reveal muscular board formed concrete walls to remind the visitor that at its heart, this home is a structure for living, and not just a sculpture to inhabit.
In addition to residential projects, Burdge and his team have designed award winning boutique hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and private clubs. Projects have been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, The Wall Street Journal, Veranda, Robb Report, Luxe and Traditional Home. In addition to receiving several "Home of the Year" PCBC Golden Nugget awards, his residential work in Sun Valley has consistently landed his firm on Mountain Living Magazine’s annual Top Mountain Architects & Interior Designers list. Douglas graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Southern California. He is currently a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. The proud father of twin sons, Doug currently resides in Malibu with his wife Laura, where they also own a popular home decor store – Malibu Beach House – and are partners in a unique Bloody Mary mix called Malibu Mary.
