Nicholas Clark: Expanding Awareness of Environmentally Friendly Flame Retardants

Over the past year, Nicholas Clark, CEO of Alexium International, has generated increasing success at his company and has continued to educate the public on the importance of environmentally friendly flame-retardant products. He has met regularly with legislators in the U.S. Capitol, Defense Department officials, policy makers and industry groups to advance both the knowledge of and the need for responsible flame-retardant chemistries across a wide spectrum of industries.

Under his leadership, Alexium recently reported a 732 percent revenue increase over FY2015. Alexium also increased top-line sales by 12X from 2015 to 2016 and its total sales pipeline increased by 250 percent over 2015. Alexium has 165 new customers and customers engaged in the field, production or sample test trials. Additionally, Alexium launched two new proprietary chemistries: Alexicool™ (a phase change material that makes fabrics that retain heat and feel cool to the touch) and Alexiflam NF™ (a revolutionary flame retardant treatment for cotton just launched for sale in Europe).

On top of this, Alexium’s sales have increased worldwide over the past year due to the successful implementation of its global distribution network. Alexium currently has a presence in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

Alexium’s recent work with the US Marine Corps to help create safe uniforms has also increased Alexium’s exposure and diversification. The military remains an important focus for Mr. Clark, not only because of its monetary benefits but because of the positive impacts it can have on the health of warfighters. Mr. Clark believes that making positive change can often exceed the importance of the bottom line.

In October, Mr. Clark helped Alexium make a big move into a brand new facility in North Carolina. Trey Gowdy, US Representative for South Carolina, 4th District, attended the opening ceremony, reflecting his recognition of its importance for the region. The new facility, which incorporates state-of-the-art technology, will not only add to the number of jobs for qualified workers in the area but also succeed in further enhancing the company’s productivity with numerous specialized chemical product lines.

In addition, Mr. Clark has amassed several honors over the past 12 months. On May 31, he joined the American Security Project’s (ASP) Board of Directors, a non-partisan organization created by US Secretary of State John Kerry and former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to educate the American public and the world about the changing nature of national security in the 21st century. The ASP is led by a 25-member Board of Directors chaired by former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman.

Mr. Clark was also named the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Congressional School in Falls Church, Virginia in September, where he provides fiduciary oversight of the school’s operations and engages in long-range strategic planning to ensure Congressional School’s future.

Mr. Clark has also been an author on numerous occasions. Please see below for some of his scholarly work:
