As the number of tenure track positions at colleges and universities declines, there has been a marked increase in the number of part-time faculty. Because of this, achieving tenure has become increasingly high-stakes for people in academia. And that impacts schools: a recent study found that on average, a tenure denial lawsuit costs $185,000. To help even the playing field, United Educators developed The Goal is Fairness, a hands-on tenure evaluation workshop that provides colleges and universities with guidance on conducting tenure evaluations that are thoughtful and fair. This helps schools avoid outcomes such as lawsuits, exposure of confidential files, and discord among faculty.

Following in United Educator’s long tradition of walking closely with member schools to help them solve their risk management issues, The Goal is Fairness is a guided, live training, video-based workshop, with a detailed facilitator’s guide to help universities carefully walk their faculty through the process of tenure, working to generate dialogue about fair tenure evaluation, increase attentiveness to existing procedures, and review past practices to encourage the consideration of improvements in tenure policies. These ideas are introduced in a short pre-work video that’s viewed by the participants, followed by a PowerPoint presentation on tenure procedures. Throughout the PowerPoint are embedded short videos that introduce real-life scenarios to spur discussion on topics relevant to each institution’s tenure process. The course is designed to benefit anyone who plays a part in the tenure evaluation process, including administrators, department chairs, and senior faculty.

The Goal is Fairness focuses on the importance of clarity, consistency, candor, and caring in the tenure process. By having a tenure policy that clearly states and defines the criteria for tenure evaluations, establishes procedures for handling allegations of misconduct at any point in the tenure process no matter the applicant, and offers practical guidance and constructive criticism for future efforts to meet the requirements, institutions can uphold the integrity of the institution and their tenure process, while also showing concern and caring for those candidates whose tenure processes are deferred. By the end, learners should be well-equipped to navigate the tenure process, both as an applicant and as a reviewer. The goal, after all, is fairness.
