Nomination Title: Oticon Opn™
Tell the story about this nominated product or service (up to 650 words). Describe its function, features, benefits, and performance to date.
Oticon Opn™ is the first hearing aid that connects to and interacts with the Internet. It is now possible to program hearing aids to talk directly with doorbells, smoke detectors and baby alarms via the Oticon ON App. Using IFTTT-enabled services, Opn can be programmed to alert caregivers to a low battery on their elderly parent’s hearing aid. Alongside this connectivity, Oticon has made giant strides with Opn’s core function as a listening device. Powered by the ultra-fast Velox platform, Opn overcomes a challenge that even the most advanced solutions of today can’t solve – the ability to handle noisy environments with multiple speakers.
As the third most common physical condition after arthritis and heart disease, hearing loss is a major public health issue that has been shown to affect physical health, cognition, perceptions of mental acuity, social skills, family relationships, self-esteem and more.
With Opn, Oticon champions an “Internet of Things that matter” where devices and services people depend on for health and well-being join today’s more entertainment and convenience-oriented offerings. With Opn, the Internet of Things starts to matter in ways that will change people’s lives. We hope and believe that Opn will make life easier for people with hearing loss, that users will experience less difficulty in everyday listening situations, and that they will even gain advantages from their hearing aids that people without hearing aids don't enjoy!
Oticon Opn™ provides a paradigm shift in hearing aids that combines breakthrough technologies to enable a number of firsts:
Opn is the world’s first internet connected hearing aid. Opn connects to the internet via If This Then That (IFTTT.com) to automate other web-based functions that make life easier. Users can connect to a wide range of IFTTT-enabled devices used in everyday life such as doorbells, baby monitors and thermostats. Using IFTTT-enabled services, Opn can be programmed to alert caregivers to a low battery on an elderly parent’s hearing aid.
The free, downloadable Oticon ON App allows users discreet control of their Opn hearing aids and other internet-connected solutions. The App offers a convenient “find my hearing aid” search feature, links to user instructions and low battery level notifications. Opn connects directly to iPhone® so users can talk on the phone or stream music directly to their hearing aids, control volume and switch programs with just a tap of the finger.
Opn is the first hearing aid proven to make it easier on the brain. Opn enables people with hearing loss to experience 20% less listening effort, remember 20% more and enjoy 30% better speech understanding*. Powered by the ultra-fast and precise Velox™ platform, the newest BrainHearing™ solution from Oticon employs an ”open sound” approach, expertly managing multiple speech and noise sources, even in complex listening situations. Designed specifically for hearing aids, the Velox platform is a powerhouse of groundbreaking features. The tiny chip has the extreme speed needed to manage multiple sound sources, analyzing and processing data 50Xs faster than before.* The 64-band frequency resolution enables a more precise sound analysis and better sound quality to support the brain’s ability to make sense of sound.
The new OpenSound Navigator™ scans the environment 100x/s to analyze and balance every sound individually. Environmental sounds are accessible but not disturbing. With this open sound experience, Oticon makes traditional directionality - designed to focus on the main sound in front and suppress all other sounds - a thing of the past. Users can now focus on a conversation while staying attentive to people and things around them and switch focus quickly and easily.
Cosmetics are important to hearing aids users. Opn is a discreet, comfortable behind-the-ear hearing device. The processing power that once drove an Intel Pentium Pro processor is available in a small instrument powered by a 1.4 V 312 battery.
