Nomination Title: IGEL UD Pocket

Tell the story about this nominated product or service (up to 650 words). Describe its function, features, benefits, and performance to date.

Not much larger than a few paper clips, the IGEL UD Pocket is a flexible and cost-effective out-of-the-box micro thin client solution that is designed to improve the security of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) initiatives in organizations with remote or mobile workforces. Launched on December 6, 2016, the revolutionary UD Pocket provides simple, secure on-demand access to virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments via a USB-bootable device, without overwriting the local operating system (OS).

The groundbreaking micro client device enables remote and mobile workers to access cloud services, server-based computing applications and virtual desktops by plugging the tiny device into any client machine. Here, it automatically integrates into the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) for secure remote support, deployment and management. UD Pocket extends the functionality of existing hardware by enabling a second tightly managed operating system to run on an endpoint. Once the user has finished accessing their virtual desktop environment through the IGEL UD Pocket, they can simply reboot their principal OS and return to the local desktop.

The device is ideally suited for workforces with bring-your-own-device policies, remote workforces with users that operate their own devices as well as suppliers, contractors and freelance workers that required controlled access to an IT-managed network to ensure operational security.

The IGEL UD Pocket supports enterprise-level security standards and protocols. Additionally, IGEL’s entire family of thin and zero client solutions, including the UD Pocket, support two-factor authentication through integrated or external smart card readers or USB tokens, which prevents passwords from being lost, forgotten or intercepted by cybercriminals.

With the IGEL UD Pocket, the IGEL OS desktop can be accessed from any USB-bootable PC, laptop, tablet or thin client that meets the minimum requirements of an x86, 64-bit processor and 2 GB RAM. Available in a USB 3.0 form factor with backward compatibility to USB 2.0, the IGEL UD Pocket measures 22.4mm x 12.2mm x 6mm and weighs 3 grams. The IGEL UD Pocket also features an industry-grade 8GB memory module, a high-quality metal chassis and is resistant to dust, shock and water.

The IGEL UD Pocket can also be integrated, like all the other IGEL OS-powered products, into the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS), a centralized and secure remote management system that provides organizations with complete control over their IGEL endpoints, saving time and resources, and reducing operating expenses.

In practice, the IGEL UD Pocket delivers unique, real world value propositions. Take a PC upgrade project for example. BYOD has many users working off their own PCs, but securing against malware and ransomware attacks is a critical issue. The solution is to move to a server-based computing model where IT can better implement controls to ensure that none of those PCs are infected with screen scrapers and other problems at the OS level. Installing software on every PC would be a nightmare fraught with problems. Instead, IGEL UD Pocket can be sent to every user, with simple instructions to plug it in, modify the boot sequence to the IGEL UD Pocket and “voila”! The PC now connects to IGEL Cloud Gateway, downloads security the latest configuration and security certificates, and user productivity is restored, simply and securely.

Or consider the scenario of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, a flood, an earthquake or fire which leads to the office being closed. The datacenter is still up and running – or has failed over to the recovery site out of state – but users can’t access their desktops. Enter IGEL UD Pocket. The company that issued a “Pocket” to every associate as part of the company on-boarding process now has employees that are ready to work from any computer. Employees simply plug their UD Pocket into their home computer, laptop or other x86 device, change the boot source to USB, and “presto” they’re online and productive, with a secure configuration downloaded seamlessly from the IGEL Cloud Gateway.
