Briefly summarize your book: its genesis, purpose, thesis, story, and results to date (up to 250 words).

American Type Culture Collection, a global biological materials resource and standards organization established in 1922, depended on government funding for decades. However, as federal priorities shifted during the 20th century, the organization languished. Raymond Cypess took the helm of ATCC in 1993 with a clear purpose: To reinvigorate the organization, raise its profile in the biological sciences, and advocate for standards in biological research. Cypess sought to adopt a business model to ensure ATCC could become self-sustaining as it grew and bio resources circulated more widely for research purposes.

Cypess’ efforts paid off. He transformed ATCC from a nonprofit repository into a vital resource, pioneering global enterprise in the sciences.

Cypess sought to preserve the story of ATCC’s transformation to inspire business leaders, nonprofit professionals and policymakers to embrace a business model by which entrepreneurial thinking creates self-sustaining organizations that work for the public good. In 2015, he engaged The History Factory to help distill ATCC’s transformation story. In a series of facilitated sessions and interviews, The History Factory gathered insights that formed the basis for the publication. The resulting narrative includes key events and personal stories that are emblematic of ATCC’s character and the changes that took place between 1993 and the present.

Transformation of an Icon: ATCC and the New Business Model for Science, an illustrated 135-page book, was published in December 2016. More than 5,500 paperback and hardcover copies were printed, and an electronic version of the book was produced to extend the book’s reach.
