Nomination Title: Hawke Media
Tell the story about what this nominated organization has achieved since January 1, 2016 (up to 650 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms.
For a marketing agency to build a distinct brand with true impact, it must excel at providing a unique service offering, instilling client pride, satisfying employees, and being an industry leader while continuing to grow.
In 2016, Hawke Media has outperformed virtually every other marketing agency on hard metrics. This agency’s success is largely due to the fact that it does not require long-term contracts, doesn’t charge high rates, and is transparent and easy to work with. This is why we submit Hawke Media as Marketing Agency of the Year for 2016.
Unique Service Offering: To succeed, marketing agencies must identify their strengths and leverage them to stand out. In 2016, Hawke Media did this by refining its month-to-month à la carte service offering. Hawke Media can manage for a client just one service, an entire digital marketing strategy, or anything in between with no long-term contract in place. To ensure its clients receive the best service, Hawke Media did away with account executives: Clients speak directly to the lever-pullers, which is vital in an industry evolving toward a more focused scope of work. Hawke’s clients demonstrated appreciation for this model in 2016, as evidenced by Hawke Media tripling its client referral business and increasing its total percentage of revenue from existing client referrals by 40 percent.
Client Pride: With marketing agencies, most client relationships come to an end at some point, so it’s important to ensure they finish on a positive note. Hawke has mastered the art of instilling pride in clients. In a survey, 90 percent of Hawke’s clients said they “would use Hawke again for marketing services” post-engagement. This is partly because clients’ revenue increased by an average of 23 percent over the first three months of their engagement with Hawke; many clients achieved annual sales run rates in excess of $1 million.
Satisfied Employees: The advertising, marketing, and public relations industry relies on employees to execute; yet, as an industry, it sees higher employee turnover than others. Hawke Media has overcome this problem: Only 5 percent of the agency’s employee turnover was voluntary in 2016. Hawke was also named one of the Top 10 Happy Places to Work in 2016, and it prioritizes employee growth and inclusion. In 2016, Hawke increased its median salary by 13 percent and its average salary by 17 percent. Hawke’s professional staff includes 24 women and 15 ethnic minorities — these two groups make up 56 percent of its workforce. In a survey, 87 percent of Hawke’s employees say the agency is “very strong in balancing challenging work with proportional recognition and satisfaction.”
Industry Leadership: Hawke Media prides itself on being an industry leader. In 2016, Hawke CEO Erik Huberman and COO Tony Delmercado together published 48 bylined articles in 25 publications, including Entrepreneur, Internet Retailer, OPEN Forum, MarketingProfs, Convince & Convert, and a host of other reputable titles. Both Erik and Tony are published in Entrepreneur at least once a month. Moreover, Erik will be unveiling the first artificial intelligence marketing platform at the Future of Marketing event at Pre-TEDxLA at the end of November. Hawke Media has also dedicated a regular podcast to educating listeners on industry trends and featuring influential speakers.
Continued Growth: Hawke reduced its monthly churn rate by 37 percent in 2016, and its revenue is up 125 percent year-to-date. Since the beginning of 2016, Hawke’s staff has more than doubled. At the start of the 2016 fiscal year, Hawke Media had a goal of doubling its sales. The agency has already hit its run rate, achieving monthly that sales-doubling goal, while 58 percent of marketing agencies are experiencing the opposite, citing not enough clients.
