Today’s progressive employers use benefits as part of their employment brand strategy to attract and retain top talent and to seek innovative ways to engage prospective and current employees in their benefits, not only during open enrollment, but year round. As employees take on more responsibility for choosing and paying for their health care plans, they’re looking for resources to guide them in the process. The BENEFITFOCUS® Marketplace enables companies to capitalize on the growing trend towards consumerism driven partly by highly mobile workforces and partly by the expectations of “digital natives” — mobile first and personalization.

Benefitfocus recognized this need and identified an opportunity to develop a resource with the BENEFITFOCUS® Marketplace—an enterprise benefits management platform consisting of an integrated portfolio of products and services that has enabled tens of millions of consumers to efficiently shop for, enroll in, manage and exchange benefits information.

Much has changed since the Marketplace was first created, so Benefitfocus redesigned the application from the ground up, focusing mainly on the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI). They introduced a new UI framework built using a core set of modern web languages, leveraging the work of some of the big players in the industry (i.e. Facebook and LinkedIn). The back-end was also rebuilt to better utilize its service-oriented architecture to power the interface.

The design featured mobile first patterns and new branding assets, along with color palette, typography and iconography, all designed from scratch. The Benefitfocus team also rebuilt the Consumer Role, which is what employees experience when they shop for benefits on the platform. The total overhaul of the redesign included a personalized smart welcome page, guided shopping with “Best Match” plan recommendations and cost comparison tools. On the administrator side, Benefitfocus added functional features for employers, providing compliance automation and a benefits tracker, along with data and analytics tools for deeper insights on employees.

With the new features, the innovative Benefitfocus Marketplace platform morphed into an Amazon-like shopping experience, including the following unique features:

For Employees:

•Mobile enrollment – the first enterprise benefits management platform to offer mobile enrollment for open enrollment.
•Recommendation engine, comparison and decision support tools – provides real-time cost estimates to help users make the right decision, by calculating total out of pocket cost for each plan based on users’ customized usage scenario.
•Progress indication – progress indicators show the user what they’ve covered so far, and what else they need to complete the enrollment process.
•Plan Shopping app – user-centered design experience integrated with the app on the plan selection page to make the tool more prominent; enables users to review the various options of health care plans and provides a guided shopping experience with plan recommendations.

For Employers/Benefits Managers:

•Compliance automation – automation of complex ACA compliance reports, benefits administration and management tasks.
•Data and analytics – insight into key drivers of employee benefits and health care costs to design smarter health care plans with Core Analytics, powered by the Hadoop data cloud.
•Multi-level search and filtering – shares administrative insights to show employers how much employees’ chronic conditions will cost the company and informs decision making on alternatives for managing chronic conditions.
•Employee Engagement – personalized, targeted communications and resources to boost employee engagement.

As a result of rebuilding the enterprise architecture to power the new features, Benefitfocus was able to triple user-concurrency on the platform in time for the biggest open enrollment to date – enrolling users in 39 million plans.
