@zoos_aquariums is the Twitter account of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). In order to reach our followers around the world, we publish tweets around the clock every day of the week. Many tweets are sent live, in real-time, in the Eastern time zone. Other tweets are scheduled to publish during overnight hours to reach followers in different time zones. Tweets are responded to by trained account administrators during normal business hours each weekday. The strongest tweets from our members are curated daily on @zoos_aquariums.

Delighting followers with compelling photos and videos of animals at AZA-accredited facilities is one of the goals of this account. Doing so helps us connect our audience to the critical need for conservation work. We give followers opportunities to save animals in the wild! They include making donations, and purchases that support, AZA’s SAFE® (Saving Animals From Extinction) program.
Other goals include showing the great animal care at our facilities, the scientific research underway, and the ways AZA members contribute to their communities.
Our strategy involves participating in large projects with our association members. These include spur-of-the-moment opportunities like the #CuteAnimalTweetOff which reached more than 44+ million users. Pre-planned, joint, efforts include tweetstorms™, Thunderclaps and promotion of Facebook Lives.
Our strategy emphasizes regularly sharing news tailored to Twitter.
Appropriate hashtags are used in our clear, concise and conversational tweets. They’re rich with visual elements including graphics, emoticons, and curated live streams from AZA-accredited facilities.
Shortened links regularly provide additional information.
Followers include visitors, partners, politicians and reporters.
Since embracing this new strategy in the fall, impressions have increased more than 400% without advertising! All forms of engagement are also up, along with the follower count.
