Nomination Title: Clare Hart Focuses on Customers and Product Innovation

  • Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated executive
during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):

Clare Hart, President of the Dow Jones Enterprise Media Group and Executive
Vice President of Dow Jones & Company assumed her role in March 2006 – just
one month after the company was reorganized into three business units:
Enterprise Media Group, Consumer Media Group and Local Media Group. Under
Ms. Hart’s leadership and drive, Dow Jones’s Enterprise Media Group is a
profitable $675 million entity and committed more than ever to a strong focus on
customers and continuous product innovation. The Dow Jones Enterprise Media
Group is an acknowledged leader in providing essential news and business
information to individuals in enterprises around the world and employs nearly 2,200
people world-wide, including nearly 1,000 news staff.

When Clare joined Dow Jones she brought her vision for delivering Dow Jones’s
business news and information to customers, when, where and how they need it.
This was the same philosophy that Clare employed prior to her role at Dow Jones,
when she was president and CEO of Factiva, before it was acquired by Dow Jones
in December 2006. From January 2000 to February 2006, Ms. Hart drove the
strategic vision for this award-winning and innovative business news and
information company. During her tenure, Factiva grew to No. 1 in its industry from
No. 3, reaching $281 million in annual revenue and serving more than 1.8 million
business people at enterprises world-wide. Proving that her business approach
was a recipe for success, Ms. Hart employed the same business approach to the
Enterprise Media Group. So, it came as no surprise when she had the foresight to
re-organize the Enterprise Media Group into three divisions in order to develop and
offer content and technology solutions that allow financial services, corporate and
media and government professionals to use news and business information in
ways that create business opportunities and financial gain. The three individual
    units include:

    • Dow Jones Indexes is an independent, full-service index provider that
develops, maintains and licenses indexes for use as benchmarks and as the basis
    of investment products
    • Dow Jones Financial Information Services produces leading databases,
electronic media, newsletters, conferences, directories, webinars, custom
products and other information services on specialized markets and industry
sectors. LBO has more than 1200 subscribers, and 46 out of the top 50 firms
    subscribe to Dow Jones VentureSource.
    • The Dow Jones Content Technology Solutions unit includes Dow Jones
Client Solutions, Dow Jones Newswires and Factiva – an aggregator of business
    news and information.

Since then, the Enterprise Media Group has introduced a number of job-specific
applications to the market, including the Dow Jones Elementized News Feed -
designed for both buy- and sell-side firms involved in algorithmic trading,
quantitative analysis and execution management, and Dow Jones Wealth
Manager, which enables financial advisors to be provided with the information they
need to build client loyalty and a strong, profitable customer base via the Web.
Additionally, Clare continued to invest in other job-specific applications for
information professionals and marketing and sales professionals within the Factiva
product suite. The success of these products along with her strategic vision to re-
align the business along organizational roles and customer needs reinforces why
Clare Hart should be recognized as the Best Executive in service businesses up
    to 2,500 employees.
