Describe for the judges the activities and accomplishments of the nominated executive during the eligibility period (up to 500 words):

Susan Beard Brouilette, MPH, MBA, is a committed member of the community
and a leader who cherishes the chance to inspire others with her passion,
dedication and fearlessness. Susan serves as the CEO of Alacare Home Health
& Hospice, Alabama’s oldest and largest family owned home health agency – as
well as one of the largest female-owned businesses in Birmingham. Because of
Susan’s leadership, Alacare – which has 27 branch locations in Alabama – has
been named one of the Birmingham Business Journal’s “Top 10 Best Places to
Work in Birmingham” for four years running. As CEO, Susan possesses the
crucial ability to blend her stellar business sense with a human touch – an
invaluable tool in providing Alacare’s patients with the highest possible quality
health care.

Over the last 21 years, she has proven her tireless loyalty both to family and to
Alabamians, and has played an integral role in the success of Alacare. The
company has been recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of
the area's Top 100 Privately Held Corporations due to Susan’s leadership.
Susan has been honored as one of the Birmingham Business Journal's “Top 40
Under 40” as well as one of its “Top Women in Birmingham.” She has also
received a nomination for the Birmingham Business Journal “Rising Star
Award.” Most recently, Susan was honored as a Birmingham Business Journal
2010 “Top Large Business CEO” Finalist.

In addition to her outstanding professional skills, however, is her commitment to
community and the organizations in which she serves. She has also been an
unwavering fundraiser and Board Member for the Hospice & Home Health Fund
of Alabama (HHHFA), Alacare’s non-profit organization that provides monetary
assistance to help hospice patients stay in their homes. She spearheaded the
fundraising effort for the University of Alabama (Birmingham) Center for Palliative
Care and sponsored the Palliative Care Unit’s Alacare Family Room. Susan
also served on the Board of the American Cancer Society and feels strongly
about supporting their community education and outreach. She was the co-
chairperson of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama 2006
Founders Dinner, which raised funds for building a new house where critically ill
children and their families can stay during treatment.

Susan, who has two teenage girls herself, feels strongly about mentoring the next
generation of successful women in Birmingham. Based on this belief, she
frequently participates in events like the UAB School of Public Health Alumni
Career Round Table. As Director-at-Large and past president of the Shades
Valley Rotary Club, she was the recipient of its 2005 Vocational Achievement
Award and regularly works with the Rotary InterAct Club at Mountain Brook High
School.

There’s no doubt that Susan’s lists of accomplishments and credentials is
certainly impressive, but where she stands out is in her ability to translate the
needs she sees in her day-to-day work into visible benefits for Birmingham and
its residents. Susan is nothing less than a pillar of the community, seeing it as
both a responsibility and a privilege to serve her community.

Provide a brief biography of the nominated executive (up to 100 words):

In 1970, Susan’s father, Major Charles Beard, founded Alacare with a mission of
service to the elderly community. Susan took her father’s vision to heart. After
earning a Bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College and concurrent
Master’s degrees in Business Administration and Public Health from the
University of Alabama at Birmingham, she had a choice. She could seek out a
lucrative job, or she could join the still-growing family business and advance its
mission. Knowing that her work with Alacare could make a tangible impact on
numerous lives, Susan joined Alacare as the Director of Community Relations
and Education, then as Associate Director of Administrative Services and finally
CEO.
