Dr. M. Amr Sadik, of Egyptian nationality a practical academic, was the former Human Resources Director of Syriatel (Telecommunication Co.) joined in April 2001 till October 2004. He contributed enormously large to the establishment of HR Department in the company and to the introduction of HR professional practices in the country in general. As a matter of fact and as evidence, most of the current HR Managers in various organizations have benefited from his wide and in-depth experience if not from being under his direct supervision as colleagues. He provided complimentary of numerous consultations and training courses to several organizations, just to enable them to establish or to run a smooth HR Department. Many Arabic articles were published in local professional magazine to enlighten people of vital role of HR. It goes without saying that his regular contributions assisted people to focus more on the valuable role of HR Department, and thus, they must invest to train and develop their potential HR candidates. In addition, he was the person who instigated social activities among organizations in the country as new approach, for the aim to elevate the motivational level of their employees. He published and distributed free-of-charge a book on Interviewing Questions that helped local HR Managers to formulate appropriate questions when conducting job interviews. Moreover, he was the person who introduced the concept of building organizational learning capabilities through the establishment of Syriatel Academy in late 2003 that contributed to Syriatel’s employee performance enhancement. In early 2006 he was nominated for Sheikh Rashid Bin Maktoom Award, UAE, as Best Arab Manager.
Due to his inspiring character, positive reputation, impact on those who are working in HR as well as his capabilities he was hired at the current organization in order to professionally establish HR Department. It is worth mentioning that due to his frequent involvement in the community, he instigated the idea of establishing Syria HR Association. He is known for his dedication and his constant desire to satisfy employees and employer. Dr. Sadik is a remarkably accomplished professional he devotes his entire time to the HR profession and the practitioners.
He was selected after careful consideration of various candidates. The problems/challenges he was facing are as follows: (1) No proper HR Structure, (2) General staff morale was down, (3) Ad-hoc systems in place, (4) Overall excess number of staff and (5) No expertise within HR members. He was able to handle them as follows:-
(1) He established HR structure in a way that goes inline with the company’s vision and mission statements (see attachment). (2) Established and conducted Organizational Culture Survey & Employee Opinion Survey to develop sense of belonging among the staff. (3) Formulated Employee Committee that represents all the departments to enhance internal communication and to address critical issues. (4) Developed and implemented various programs and polices. (5) Implemented Lean & Mean concept and was able to reduce total number of staff by 20% from 1800 to 1500 staff member. (6) Conducted frequent HR training to his team members. (7) Conducted himself Management Assessment program to company'e Executive and save US$42'500.
