Nomination Title: Cognos Incorporated – Best Product Development Team
1. Tell the story about what this nominated team achieved in the past year (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:
In 2005, Cognos launched Cognos 8 Business Intelligence, the only business intelligence (BI) product to deliver the complete range of BI capabilities: reporting, analysis, scorecarding, dashboards, business event management as well as data integration, on a single, proven architecture. As a follow up to this great success, a tight nit team of technical and entrepreneurial enthusiasts at Cognos undertook an initiative in 2006 to make the unmatched BI content found in Cognos 8 BI available to more users at every level across an organization. In order to accomplish this, the team looked at applications or devices that everyday workers are familiar with that would provide easy access to data.
Realizing that Google or a similar search engine is where nearly everyone begins their search to find information, this group of innovators at Cognos completed the development of Cognos 8 Go! Search – an access mode for Cognos 8 BI that enables everyday users to find reports, scorecards, and other content through a search engine format. To broaden these capabilities, the product development team forged first of its kind partnerships with Google and IBM. The team enabled the Cognos Go! Search Service to support IBM WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition, the IBM enterprise search platform. Through joint development efforts with Google, Cognos extended the capabilities of its Cognos Go! Search service by allowing reports, analyses, dashboards, key metrics, and alerts to be directly accessed through the new Google OneBox for Enterprise. The news of this partnership was a watershed event for the industry, resulting in record media coverage for Cognos – 200 pieces of coverage with 100,000,000 impressions in IT, business and BI publications in a three-week timeframe from March - April 2006 in North America.
Recognizing the increasingly mobile world we live in, the product group developed Cognos 8 Go! Mobile (announced in Fall 2006) – an access mode in Cognos 8 Business Intelligence that allows users to increase their productivity and improve their decision-making when working remotely by accessing operational and strategic information about customer orders, product performance, and more on their RIM BlackBerry. At RIM, Cognos has become the poster child for how to build an enterprise application on their Blackberry. As a result, product team leader, Don Campbell, has been asked to speak at their worldwide analyst, partner and customer events.
Lastly, in a business environment where Microsoft Office products thrive, the Cognos development team created the Cognos 8 Go! Office access mode. Cognos 8 Go! Office allows users to view and consume Cognos business intelligence content within Microsoft Office, eliminating users' need to cut and paste or manually load data into spreadsheets or presentations.
The Cognos product development team has seen continued success because the management team encourages a culture of innovation and the technical team is up for the challenge. Constantly encouraging and rewarding innovation, management has posted a Cognos Patents Wall of Fame at world headquarters in Ottawa, displaying all the patents that Cognos has created. To put the success in perspective, in North America Cognos has more than double the patents of its nearest competitor.
