NII Holdings Inc. is a wireless communications company operating primarily in Latin America currently recognized as one of the top technology companies in the world, due to its stellar financial performance in one of the world’s most volatile markets.
In a period of just three years, the company grew from an initial market capitalization of $50 million to more than over $9 billion, an increase of
1,950%, generating above-average value for its shareholders and investors. Its performance is so extraordinary that it was the number ONE performing stock on the NASDAQ over a three year period, and in 2005 it was included in the NASDAQ-100 Index, which comprises the best-performing and largest non-financial companies on the NASDAQ stock market and listed in the Fortune 1000.
NII’s success is first and foremost a result of the company’s team, from the customer service representatives who provide unparalleled attention to clients in the region to the product managers who create customized data applications that help drive clients’ business and productivity to the management team, led by Steve Shindler the company’s CEO, who spearheaded the company’s evolution from a start-up emerging from restructuring in 2001 to the US$9 billion company that it is today.
NII’s success can be measured by its financial performance; its extraordinary operational metrics; the many recognitions that it has received in the U.S.
and in the region; and the potential for increased growth that it has in its future.
Financial performance during 2005:
• Consolidated operating revenues of $1.75 billion - a 36% increase over 2004
• Consolidated operating income before depreciation and amortization of $484 million - a 39% increase over 2004
• Consolidated net income of $181 million or $1.24 per basic share
• Consolidated cash, cash equivalents and short term investments of $885 million
Operational metrics in 2005:
• NII added a record 627,600 net subscribers to its network, a 51% increase as compared to 2004 bringing the total year- end subscriber base to over 2.5 million
• OIBDA of $484 million for the year, a 39% increase over last year
• Average monthly service revenue per subscriber (service ARPU) was $58 for the full year, up from an average $55 last year
• Churn of 1.6% for the fourth quarter and 1.7% for the full year 2005 - a 10 basis point improvement over the previous year
These metrics are particularly impressive when this is illustrated versus the company’s competitors in the markets in which it operates.
In 2005, the company received 27 accolades from across the Americas in categories, ranging from technology to human resources to corporate social
responsibility.
Moreover in 2006, the company expects event more success. It expects a 32% increase in its subscriber base; a 33% increase in operating revenues, a 39% increase in OIBDA before stock option expenses, and it plans to expand its covered footprint - covering an additional 19 million covered pops, including expanded highway and transportation corridor coverage
NII Holdings has accomplished in a short period an extraordinary growth that would take most companies decades to see through. And, what is even more impressive is that it has done this in Latin America, a highly volatile market due to economic and political uncertainty. For its stellar achievements, it deserves consideration for the IBA’s Best Multinational Company award!
