Upon joining Vertex Richard inherited a seedling Public Sector operation. Within the first 6 months he directed and shaped the Public Sector 5-year strategic plan. This plan forms part of the corporate business plan and is instrumental in defining direction, partnerships, expansion and acquisition activity. He is a member of Vertex's Corporate and Social Responsibility Steering Group and Strategy and Public Affairs Steering Group. He has recruited a team of 10 sales professionals and public sector specialists and to quote from our HR Manager "Richard is an exceptionally strong leader of people who has built and developed a quality team of sales and account management professionals. His deployment of the Vertex people processes, in particular the one to one (performance appraisal) process is exemplary both in terms of performance review and also in ensuring the existence of robust development plans for each individual. He instinctively uses a coaching style, coupled with an appropriate balance of support and challenge. Richard has also developed strong cross functional relationships and is highly respected as an all round business leader." On joining Vertex in May 2003 there was no Public Sector pipeline. In the intervening period, Richard has led the team to create a pipeline valued at £2.5 billion and in the last twelve months has secured the two largest Business Process Outsourcing deals within the Local Government sector with a combined contract value of over £700 million. In addition, Vertex is short-listed on further Public Sector contracts with a combined value of £1.4 billion.
'Profile Raising' and 'Thought Leadership' are considered vital and examples of activity over the last twelve months include: Sponsoring relationship with the New Local Government Network (NLGN) a leading think tank organisation Chairing the 'New Waves of Local Partnerships' national conference Mentoring for the Local Government National Graduate Development Programme Appointed Efficiency Review Associate within the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Modernisation and Efficiency Review Division Speaking at a Confederation of British Industry (CBI) event to senior-level Civil Servants on Private Public Partnerships (PPPs) Frequent participation in Public Sector Think Tanks relating to industry/sector issues Sharing a debate platform with Nick Raynsford, Minister for Local Government and the Regions and James Strachan, Chair of the Audit Commission Establishing corporate relationship with the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) to align service delivery to social needs In leading his team from the front, Richard has regular contact with Chief Executives, Council Leaders, Senior Civil Servants and Government Ministers by way of one-on-one appointments and participation in public sector think tanks. The level of positive PR in the local government press has improved significantly in the last twelve months with Richard authoring several articles (please see supporting evidence) and contributing to papers. Vertex has ramped up its 'Point of View' programme by issuing white papers on market trends and challenges, and therefore improving its thought leadership position in the market. Vertex is now recognised as a leading player in the public sector.
