KEPCO Nuclear Fuel Company (KNF), established in 1982, the only domestic public company designs and manufactures nuclear fuel for PWR and PHWR, has been producing and supplying nuclear fuel for domestic nuclear power plants for the past 30 years. In addition, we have accomplished remarkable achievements in achieving our vision of ‘Global Leading Nuclear Energy Partner’ through improved competitiveness in domestic and overseas business and continuous technology development.

First, we built a second factory for cladding manufacturing in Nonsan area to build a platform for domestic new nuclear power plants and overseas nuclear power plant exports, and commenced commercial operation starting from January 2017. Safety education and supervision during construction period did not cause a single safety accident. We have secured the production power by acquiring licenses in timely manner through thorough preliminary investigation of cost reduction and licensing requirements through equipment optimization through technology development.

Second, by establishing a cooperative network with domestic and overseas related organizations, we have successfully solved transportation issues for the BNPP(Barakah Nuclear Power Plant) project in a timely manner. In the early 2017, nuclear fuel was safely transported to the UAE by establishing a working council with government departments to solve the problem of transportation of dangerous goods between nations, establishing countermeasures, and obtaining approval through consultation with the government of the port country.

Third, we built a stable fuel supply system by localizing the nuclear fuel transportation container for exporting purposes. 125 domestic transportable containers were self-developed, strengthened its export infrastructure, and achieved an import substitution effect of KRW12.5 billion. In addition, it has acquired numerous patents by improving technology of manufacturing the transportation container, and contributed to the growing together with small and medium-sized businesses.

Fourth, since the commencement of commercial operation, we have developed the world's first wet re-conversion (AUH) process technology for refining and reusing scrap generated during uranium processing, and applied for five patents at domestic and abroad. As we possess the original technology of the nuclear and the precedence relation of nuclear cycle, it is expected to provide about 35 billion won of economic effect as well as laying the foundation for the independence of nuclear technology.

Fifth, we have succeeded in developing Operational Core Analysis and Simulation Systems (OASIS) for the first time in Korea. This is the world's third real-time nuclear power plant support system developed after the US and France, and is expected to result in economic benefits of 2.4 billion won per year (based on 12 units) by enhancing the safety of the power plant and maximizing the utilization rate,

Finally, in order to respond positively to the government policy of the youth unemployment, which is a national issue, KNF-type employment stepping stone program was operated for the first time in other public institutions. In addition to strengthening co-growth with SMEs by providing employment subsidies to partner companies, we also contributed to the elimination of youth employment cliffs by creating vocational training for young job seekers

KNF was awarded with the Presidential Citation and the Minister of Industry Award on the Day of Promotion of Nuclear Safety as a contribution to the development of original technology and export promotion, and was selected to be the company with excellent quality competitiveness for 16 consecutive year and by winning the Presidential Award of the 42nd National Quality Circle Competition, many achievements were recognized.
