Briefly describe this entry’s communications objectives and how it met those objectives (up to 125 words):
Freelancer is the world's largest outsourcing/crowdsourcing site. Our site, entirely hosted in AWS, includes an asynchronous-messaging-platform utilizing a collection of thrift services to offer an internal API, and an externalized RESTful interface. We developed a real-time notification platform authored in NodeJS that uses websockets to support unicast/broadcast event distribution to browsers, as well as a system-in-Go that tracks and publishes users' online status in a RAM-backed sharded pub/sub structure.
We architected a real-time event queuing and pub/sub system on RabbitMQ to support the handling of marketplace events - e.g. updating projects. Our project and contest listing tables are supported by extensive use of highly dimensional documents stored in ElasticSearch. All services and systems are instrumented to publish statistics to graphite for analysis, tracking, and alerting.
