Company: Tabula Inc., Santa Clara, CA
Entry Submitted By: Morphoses Consulting LLC
Company Description: Tabula, Inc. is a fabless semiconductor company that has developed the world’s first 3-D Programmable Logic Devices called 3PLDs. The company launched its ABAX product family in March 2010. Manufactured using TSMC's 40nm process, ABAX combines the flexibility and rapid time-to- market of an FPGA with ASIC capacity, at price points suitable for volume production.
Nomination Category: Company / Organization Categories
Nomination Sub Category: Most Innovative Tech Company of the Year - Up to 100 Employees

Nomination Title: Tabula

Tell the story about what this nominated organization achieved since January 1 2011 (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

Tabula has developed a groundbreaking programmable logic architecture which uses time as a third dimension. By using time, Tabula’s chips emulate a physical 3d device through its Spacetime software. Instead of creating a new physical structure, tabula has devised a way to break up designs into eight sections called folds that are successively loaded into its chips, executed and replaced. This new innovation in semiconductor design is based on Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity which advanced the idea that space and time are dimensions of the same reality.

Tabula believes that the Spacetime technology will enable a renaissance of innovation. It will make it possible for anyone with a great idea to turn this idea into production silicon, take it to market quickly with minimum up-front investment, and to have a solution cost compatible with volume production.

Such an advance will benefit everyone, from the world largest OEMs which are facing intense competitive pressures, to the individual entrepreneurs for whom the cost of developing a custom logic solution has become prohibitive.

Milestones achieved: Tabula successfully launched the industry’s first 3D PLD silicon devices. Shortly after, the company closed on the largest round of funding $108M Series D ever given to a private semiconductor company. This stat was taken from the Global Semiconductor Association.

Provide a brief (up to 100 words) biography about the leader of this nominated company:

STEVE TEIG, PRESIDENT AND CTO Tabula

Prior to founding Tabula, Steve Teig was CTO of Cadence Design Systems (NSDQ:CDNS). Steve joined Cadence through its acquisition of Simplex Solutions (NSDQ: SPLX), where he was also CTO. At Simplex, Steve invented and led the technology development for the X Architecture. Before joining Simplex, Steve co-founded two successful biotechnology companies: CombiChem (NSDQ: CCHM) and BioCAD. Steve received a B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University. He holds over 240 patents. In 2002, he broke Thomas Edison’s record for the number of patents filed by an individual in a single year.
