In 2010, Martin Mucci was named the third president and CEO in Paychex history. At the time, sales and revenue were down.  Mucci planned to expand the company, shore up the sales organization, and find new revenue in the company's insurance products.

With a focus on customers and a strong strategic vision, Mucci has helped bring Paychex to a year of record revenues.  An involved leader, Mucci regularly visits the company’s branches, meeting with sales and operations staff, building close relationships and generating respect.

Mucci and his team shook up the company's sales department. The changes included a new compensation plan and support tools, reducing sales representative turnover.  Paychex expanded sales territory, focused on market segmentation for payroll and HR/401K, establishing a new sales team for 401K offerings.

“The sales group is fully executing now, looking at all kinds of different channels. Now we’re focused on banks and franchises giving us referrals”, said Mucci.:

-Partnered with the Credit Union Business Group to offer products and services to members
-Added franchises Subway and Tim Horton eateries.

Under Mucci’s leadership, acquisitions, new services and investments in new technology helped produce competitive advantages, and strong results:

In 2011, Paychex acquired:
o SurePayroll,  a DIY payroll processor helping reach small business.
o ePlan Services, providing a web based tool for maintaining 401(k) plans leading to the launch of Paychex Advisor Select 401(k) for fee-based financial advisers.

In 2012, Paychex acquired:
o Partner Icon Time Systems for time and attendance management.
o Partner ExpenseWire,  a leading software-as-a-service (SaaS) expense management solution

Increasing SaaS offerings Paychex redesigned its web landing page and dashboard and launched Paychex Mobile providing clients with on-the-go access to all of their services.

-“Paychex has always been known as a service leader. What we're doing now is taking technology innovation and combining that with our service.” said Mucci In 2012, Paychex upgraded BuildMyBiz.com, an online resource for entrepreneurs and business owners .  Paychex also partnered with SCORE to help businesses and entrepreneurs avoid costly mistakes.

The company re-launched an enhanced Paychex Accountant Knowledge Center, a free online resource with customizable information and time-saving online tools for accounting professionals.

Paychex also launched a Business Insurance Payment Service, building on its successful history with Workman’s Comp insurance clients.

Results:

Paychex achieved several key benchmarks in the last year:
-After years of decline, Paychex’s client base was flat in 2012 and is growing in 2013.
-Revenues have improved for twelve consecutive quarters.
-Client retention was near a record high of 80%
-Half of new sales come from new businesses, expanded territory, and the new 401K sales force.

"In a very short period of time we've made some changes and done some significant additions to help us grow," Mucci said. "The economy remains one of the biggest challenges, but our goal as a leadership team is to continue to grow and take it to the next level." Through it all, Mucci said, the company has maintained high levels of operations and customer service. Paychex recently received the highest client satisfaction scores in its history.
