Nomination Title: Masimo Pronto-7

Tell the story about this nominated product or service (up to 500 words). Describe its function, features, benefits, and performance to date.

Handheld, bloodless blood testing is now a reality. Cleared in January 2012 by the FDA, the new Masimo Pronto-7 allows doctors to measure blood hemoglobin levels without a painful needle-stick or invasive blood draw, part of a noninvasive trend led by Masimo. It is available to physician offices nationwide.

In an independent product review article for Contemporary Pediatrics, Dr. Andrew J. Schuman, an adjunct assistant professor of pediatrics at Dartmouth Medical School, called the Pronto-7 “potential game-changing technology.”

“Parents and pediatricians will also appreciate our new ability to screen without the scream,” Dr. Schuman says.

The Pronto-7 is a mini-lab in the palm of your hand.

The Pronto-7 looks like an iPhone and uses a small sensor that painlessly clips onto your finger to measure hemoglobin, heart rate, and blood oxygen in seconds - on-the-spot and without removing a drop of blood.

Thomas A. Murray, III, MD, a Salem, Mass., OB/GYN and one of the first users of the Pronto-7, says anemia is a common disorder in offices like his. He says the Pronto-7 allows him to quickly and accurately measure patients’ hemoglobin levels in his office without the needles, blood vials, and biohazard waste associated with blood testing.

The Pronto-7 puts the power of accurate noninvasive hemoglobin spot-check measurements into any clinician's hands, in virtually any environment. With dimensions of just 13 cm x 7.2 cm x 2.5 cm (5.1" x 2.8" x 1") and weight of 296 grams (10.5 ounces), Pronto-7 offers the convenience, speed, and accuracy today’s care providers need to facilitate timely assessment and treatment decisions. And, embedded 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth communication capabilities make wireless printing and emailing of test results quick and easy.

Provide a brief (up to 100 words) biography about the leader(s) of the team that developed this nominated product or service:

Joe Kiani is an inventor of world-changing noninvasive patient monitoring devices, a trusted voice for patients & an industry maverick. He’s the founder & CEO of Masimo, a global medical technology innovator credited with revolutionizing pulse oximetry – technology used to measure blood oxygen, among other things. Before Kiani’s inventions, pulse oximetry didn’t work on patients who moved a lot (i.e., infants, trauma victims) & those with low blood-flow.

Convinced adaptive signal processing could solve these problems - & save lives - he founded Masimo in 1989 to improve the accuracy of painless patient monitoring. Pronto-7 is Masimo's latest innovation.
