Nomination Category: Company / Organization Categories
Nomination Sub Category: Tech Innovation of the Year

Nomination Title: Life Technologies

Tell the story about this nominated achievement since January 1 2011 (up to 500 words). Focus on specific accomplishments, and relate these accomplishments to past performance or industry norms. Be sure to mention obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and outcomes:

Life Technologies' brands are found in nearly every life sciences lab in the world and include innovative instrument systems under the Applied Biosystems and Ion Torrent names, as well as, its Invitrogen, GIBCO, Ambion, Molecular Probes and TaqMan products.
Industry-Leading Innovation

Life Technologies' introduced hundreds of new products in 2011, but none with as much potential to improve the human condition as the game-changing Ion Torrent semiconductor sequencing technology. This new method of genetic sequencing offers speed, simplicity, and scalability, and is applicable to scientists involved in every stage of discovery research.

• “Facing an immediate threat to human lives spotlights the profound power of science and collaboration. In 2011, when a deadly strain of E. coli quickly spread throughout Europe, the best scientific minds around the world came together to contain it. Armed with breakthrough semiconductor sequencing technology, research teams in China and Germany sequenced the hybrid bacterial strain in an unprecedented three hours. Had the outbreak occurred only months before, prior to the launch of the Ion PGM™ Sequencer, the process could have taken weeks, leaving millions of people exposed.” “Knowing the bacterium’s origin enabled Life Technologies scientists to quickly develop a PCR-based TaqMan® kit to test for it. In record time, health officials had the means to detect the strain in food samples. It was just a glimpse of how accelerated discovery can improve life”.

In less than a year since Life Technologies commercially launched the PGM™,the instrument has become the best-selling, next-generation sequencing machine in the world and is democratizing DNA sequencing.

“In early January 2012, we started taking orders for our new bench top Ion Proton™ Sequencer, which is designed to sequence the entire human genome in a day for $1,000. Life Technologies has a legacy of democratizing new technologies, and the speed and low cost of semiconductor-based technology will bring DNA sequencing into new areas we can’t even imagine, said Gregory T. Lucier, CEO
